I have seen a lot of auction threads which says something on the lines of -

Members with trade score lower than 5, please contact me via PM before placing your place bid..

I am curious to what kind of questions do you ask the new guy, that may help raise your confidence ?
How do you determine the eligibility of the new guy ?
What questions do you ask in private messages that cannot be asked in public ?

P.S - I know that it is pretty normal for sellers to not allow relatively new members to bid on their auction, for obvious reasons.

i haven't asked any questions, but maybe they might ask:

are you a here today and a be gone tomorrow bot?

    and if not, then....

    can you pay via escrow?

    :)

    imo...

I don't ask them anything, they ask me whether they can bid on my auctions and I check their profile, their posts, their bids on other auctions and trade reviews (if there are any) and then I decide whether they are legit buyers or not. It can definitely happen that I make the wrong decision and let non-paying bidders bid on my auction but it rarely happens. I think it's better to stay safe and not let the new comers bid on the auction.

    Coincidentally or not

i accepted an offer from a new member last week via pm

on 5/9, they started the escrow transaction
on same day, i confirmed my payment options

as of today, the new member has not sent funds to escrow.

    imo.....

Well, these can be done without invitation to PM.
What is the point of PM invitation then ?

If I was dealing with someone that had 3+ and 1- I would read the negative review and then ask the member making the bid for an explanation of events. If I had any more doubts I would contact the person leaving the negative review.

That said... it is just like google reviews... get enough of them and you are bound to get one or two bad ones. If most of the reviews are good I just assume the bad reviews are a hiccup or a disgruntled customer.

I like the feedback system but also understand that life is not perfect and hiccups can occur. As with any sale, due prudence is always indicated and sometimes that means you have to ask a few questions to form your own opinion.

Exactly, the crux of my question is to avoid such situations.
    Thanks for your input.

Just trying to figure out if there are any obvious methods that our experienced members follow by starting a Private Messaging with the newbie.
Thanks for sharing your opinion, some great tips there.

How will I know that they want to bid on my auction unless they PM me? I don't let them post anything on my auction thread, or make a bid. Because I will then have to ask the mods to remove their posts every time. So I say the exact same thing in every auction, that is:

BIDDERS WITH LESS THAN 10 (TEN) POSITIVE TRADE REVIEWS MUST PM ME BEFORE BIDDING. THEIR BIDS WON'T BE ACCEPTED UNLESS I ALLOW IT.
