The other Plymouth ... history ???
aggie,
Good group of geo-names.
It's nice to see the start of development of your Plymouth(.)mobi. You might also consider expanding your site to include a little ditty about the other Plymouths in the world. And hopefully even more mobile eyeballs will settle on your dot mobi site. I have visited the town of Plymouth in Massachusetts, USA several times in the past. It is a very busy summer tourist destination on the coast about a half hour's drive from Boston, MA.
FWIW - A brief and somewhat skewed version of history sort of related to Plymouth, MA:
Under the guise of escape from religious persecution, a band of lactose-intolerant forefathers (and foremothers) left Plymouth, England for a new world in search of a good meal and free dentistry. Once there, they were greeted with caution by the locals who were both impressed and dismayed by the settlers' fashion sense especially the wearing of hats.
Life was not easy. Naming their new territory, towns, and settlements proved to be an exhausting mental exercise due to the confusing tongue of the natives and utter lack of road signage - all of which was driving the settlers crazy. So in an effort to calm the people and move things along, the town elders ended up reusing names from the Old World that were easy to remember. So that is why we have places in the US named Plymouth, Jamestown, New York, New London, New Jersey, Ithaca, Athens, Rome, and Podunk ... well okay no one really knows how that got in there. However, to appease the locals and set the stage for the pro-phonics debate centuries later, some places retained their native names ... like Topeka, Tuscaloosa, Onondaga, Okefenokee, and Disneyworld.
Then, after many decades of making a go of it, news of the settlers' taming of the new wilderness got back to mother England. As the monarchs figured that that they were missing out on a potential good thing, they sent over a bunch of fellas to organize the place. That move was ultimately squelched by a band of tireless, disheveled, settlers-turned-patriots who prevailed with but two lanterns, a horse, and just enough wigs to satisfy the historical artists.
The British soldiers were sent packing in only their underwear and hats and all the red uniforms were put on a boat that ultimately crashed on the Canadian coast. Legend has it that three crew members survived, settled the cold northern land, met some French-speaking woman, and started wearing the red uniforms so that they could be seen from a distance as they saved the occasional woman tied to the railroad tracks. Nice story so far, eh?
Meanwhile, the two great lands and cultures, separated by an awfully big pond, worked out their differences, became pretty good friends, and worked together on many important projects, especially the ones that seemed too difficult for the rest of the world to tackle alone.
Back in the United States, all was not lost because even though the motherland was rejected two hundred years ago, it was not forgotten. During the more recent times in a prehensile type of monarchy-envy, many in the US enjoyed the music performed by a band of questionable gentness who called themselves "Queen" ... and whose stage set by a bunch of shaggy-haired crooners and a leather-panted-waif who no doubt has gotten more satisfaction than most of us could dream of ....
That is of course until the Dot Mobi consortium was formed and a new type of property became available to those with vision and courage to take a risk. Best of luck to all the .mobi settlers. Keep moving forward and ignore the .mobi-doubters, they're the ones seeing red today. We too will work out our differences as there is room enough for both camps in the ever expanding online world.
