Hello just received an offer for Plymouth.mobi via afternic.com i think it's a rubbish offer personally, especially as i've just sweat blood to develop it and get it up and running! But what do you guys think I should counter offer for it? If the site adds any value to it here's the link plymouth.mobi

But I haven't heard of any City .mobi's sell yet unless i've missed the news? For anyone that doesn't know Plymouth in the UK is a City in Devon, and is one of the big martime/naval ports in the UK.

Any views will be appreciated.

Don't sell it. Keep your developed Mobi names unless you get a very good offer. You can counter with another offer that you personally would feel is worth it, but I'd personally tell you to hold onto it.

nice job aggie!
for me, because of the history & importance of plymouth in the uk,
plus the port & military connections & local business.
then also cos there are a few plymouths in the world & you have developed 'her'
i would say low $xxxx is the minimum. i think you would have to say mid $xxxx-high
hold :)
good luck

I was thinking about just keeping it, as i'm proud of my baby! Took me weeks to finish it off and it would be hard just to let it go after all that! But in the end it is a rubbish offer and i think it's just a reseller chancing it or something. But i'll just counter with a silly amount and if his offer moves up consideribly i may take the bait!

Good domain.

I live only a few miles from Plymouth and visit regularly, it is very visible as to how much money has been spent in recent years in the city.

Plymouth has a population of more than 300,000 and has recently had millions spent on new shopping centers and on the city center.

Great investment, certainly worth developing further.

Cheers for the comments guys! It's most appreciated. I think i'll keep it at the moment, at this early stage in the game, it's only been developed into a functional site for approx 2 weeks and it's already earned me $1.00!! On Admob, thats without any search engine assistance and without any proactive advertising so i think it'll be worth getting it popular with the public first then reassess the earnings/potential value as a going concern after that.

Hey, give it up, Brits!

There are many Plymouth in the states...remember. Hello, we're the chaps on the other side of the pond. :hi:

If the offer is rubbish and you know it, then by means, ignore it. It would not even be worthy of a counter offer. Any developed site has great value. Any city or landmark site specific to any one local is exactly that...the one and only.

Develop them all, I say. BRAVO!

Are there any other towns within the area you can get as well ? Create like a ring of sites ? You've done all the hard work by creating the template with plymouth.mobi so dev time should be quick.

Looks very good :) I would'nt sell it at the momment . I think place names will become premium properties in the future.

I think that is stronger than Plymouth. Imagine a holidaymaker portal incorporating all the towns along the coast town to cornwall. Local tourist boards produce those free newspapers that get printed at the begining of the season. See if you can get some free advertising in those to promote the site or even an insert to go in.

I think any popular (the more popular the better) tourist or vacation (or as you brits say "holiday") spots is a win-win situation.

A directory of events, hotels, dining, pub and all else, including those exclusive and ellusive high dollar escorts, right in your hands.

That is how I envision mobi to work and be successful.

Working on a couple of sites currently, actually someone else doing the work, so I will be happy to join the ranks of .mobi sites.

By the way, to any ".mobi haters" viewing the thread...

I have .com, .net, .biz, .ms, and a few other active sites...diversity.

Don't hate me cause I'm pretty.

And to all you Brits out there, loved you in Austin Powers!

Yeah i think local hot spots could be a good earner, my plan is to list for free at the start and when the sites get popular charge a fee for priority listing and maybe get a sponsor for the whole site so their ad shows up on every page somewhere! I've now really cornered the isles of scilly, the channel islands, and torbay (Where i live!).So hopefully with local contacts and the word of mouth the message should get spread around nicely!

I disagree.

I live in Torbay (Dawlish) and while it is a main tourist destination, I believe that Plymouth.Mobi has more of a future. Purely because Plymouth is a large city (far larger than the regional capital, Exeter) and is having bundles of cash thrown at it for development purposes.

The other Plymouth ... history ???

aggie,

Good group of geo-names.

It's nice to see the start of development of your Plymouth(.)mobi. You might also consider expanding your site to include a little ditty about the other Plymouths in the world. And hopefully even more mobile eyeballs will settle on your dot mobi site. I have visited the town of Plymouth in Massachusetts, USA several times in the past. It is a very busy summer tourist destination on the coast about a half hour's drive from Boston, MA.

FWIW - A brief and somewhat skewed version of history sort of related to Plymouth, MA:

Under the guise of escape from religious persecution, a band of lactose-intolerant forefathers (and foremothers) left Plymouth, England for a new world in search of a good meal and free dentistry. Once there, they were greeted with caution by the locals who were both impressed and dismayed by the settlers' fashion sense especially the wearing of hats.

Life was not easy. Naming their new territory, towns, and settlements proved to be an exhausting mental exercise due to the confusing tongue of the natives and utter lack of road signage - all of which was driving the settlers crazy. So in an effort to calm the people and move things along, the town elders ended up reusing names from the Old World that were easy to remember. So that is why we have places in the US named Plymouth, Jamestown, New York, New London, New Jersey, Ithaca, Athens, Rome, and Podunk ... well okay no one really knows how that got in there. However, to appease the locals and set the stage for the pro-phonics debate centuries later, some places retained their native names ... like Topeka, Tuscaloosa, Onondaga, Okefenokee, and Disneyworld.

Then, after many decades of making a go of it, news of the settlers' taming of the new wilderness got back to mother England. As the monarchs figured that that they were missing out on a potential good thing, they sent over a bunch of fellas to organize the place. That move was ultimately squelched by a band of tireless, disheveled, settlers-turned-patriots who prevailed with but two lanterns, a horse, and just enough wigs to satisfy the historical artists.

The British soldiers were sent packing in only their underwear and hats and all the red uniforms were put on a boat that ultimately crashed on the Canadian coast. Legend has it that three crew members survived, settled the cold northern land, met some French-speaking woman, and started wearing the red uniforms so that they could be seen from a distance as they saved the occasional woman tied to the railroad tracks. Nice story so far, eh?

Meanwhile, the two great lands and cultures, separated by an awfully big pond, worked out their differences, became pretty good friends, and worked together on many important projects, especially the ones that seemed too difficult for the rest of the world to tackle alone.

Back in the United States, all was not lost because even though the motherland was rejected two hundred years ago, it was not forgotten. During the more recent times in a prehensile type of monarchy-envy, many in the US enjoyed the music performed by a band of questionable gentness who called themselves "Queen" ... and whose stage set by a bunch of shaggy-haired crooners and a leather-panted-waif who no doubt has gotten more satisfaction than most of us could dream of ....

That is of course until the Dot Mobi consortium was formed and a new type of property became available to those with vision and courage to take a risk. Best of luck to all the .mobi settlers. Keep moving forward and ignore the .mobi-doubters, they're the ones seeing red today. We too will work out our differences as there is room enough for both camps in the ever expanding online world.

acc, I was thinking the same thing. plymouth.mobi could have a landing page with a link to either the US or UK version. Double the income opportunity for one domain.

Now as for your history, if you ever teach a class, I want in!
