I love the name; it would make for a great App name.
I would personally hold out for an user and ask for lower XX,XXX.

Good luck.

Hello Sharon, welcome to the forum.
This is a very nice domain, as I mentioned in PM. You have the dot com/net/org, and others have regged the .co.uk, .info, .ca. There may be other extensions taken also, I didn't check all of them. So it's a very good brandable domain, with age, and with multiple extensions taken, which shows it's attractive to others. There are no TM's on this but it's a name that just begs to be branded. USPTO shows you did have this trademarked but let the TM expire.

I think there's a very wide swing to valuation; it clearly has strong appeal and value, so I think even a reseller would pay up to maybe $2K for this one, possibly even more. I know if I were buying this to invest, I would pay that amount and still be confident of a good profit.

For an end user, it's a difficult call because a domain like this is a two-sided coin; on one side it's vague exactly what it's for, obviously something to do with locality, tracking maybe, mapping, shipping, mining, travel, but could even swing to social, dating, who knows, and this kind of nebulous use can make it difficult to find a buyer because... who do you approach?

On the other side of the coin, you can switch the word 'vague' into the word 'versatile' and while one buyer might be scratching their head, the next buyer might think 'perfect'!! This domain definitely has the power that even a large corporation would feel confident in branding. If I had a multimillion $ biz in a certain field I would feel very confident branding it with a word like GeoLocal. Has stature and solidity and isn't spelled weirdly and sails through the radio test.

So you might have a hard time unloading it to an end user for $5K... or you might encounter a big buyer who loves it, has deep pockets, and will pay low xx,xxx all the way up to mid or even high xx,xxx. Kind of a lottery-ticket name, not quite sure what you'll get for it. I think low xx,xxx is very realistic and sober; anything above that is gravy.

Good luck, and thanks for PM'ing me about this.

Thanks Bannen, I like the "versatile" approach, so will continue to get it out there and in front of the buyer who will think it's the perfect brand name!

I think that the lack of responses are in part due to Bannen's thorough response.
I tend to agree with him for the most part.

I had actually registered geolocal.io at one point but let it drop because it ended up being something I didn't want to maintain in the collection :) To me it works as a functional name but not one that is broadly brandable. It could be the foundation of many a business but it seems to be more in a service provider manner rather than a consumer product company. Think platform, think service. A company in the business of geolocal marketing should really want this name despite it being what I consider a generic.

I think that in the end I prefer the direction of proximity marketing which is more consumer driven (beacon names as well) but most people don't know the difference so you're not going to get great reseller value which I think Bannen indicates as well. I tend to think geolocal is still sounding a little dated.

I would never settle for $5K as the name has a much larger upside than that price would ever suggest. I don't know what the high-end is but it will be determined a lot by your patience and pressure you feel to sell. I would think even low $xx,xxx is not what people would call a motivated buyer. This is a category killer and if you can, and time permits, you should hold out for more (unless you see the term losing steam which is possible)

This is all theoretical - the name is good enough that you should have received offers. I would expect by now you should have received offers in the low $x,xxx range and probably a whole lot of $60 offers. For all I know you've received offers in the higher range.
The number should give some indication of the actual desirability that you can use as a better basis than public opinion here.

My immediate thought was that this is a 20-30K name but I'm sure others think that's high and some will think that's low (and I'm second guessing) because that's how opinions works. Continue to keep the .net and .org. .The org in particular allows for an open source / free version branch of any platform and, as suggested, that's how I see this name used.

[Update - being a bit stalkery]
With your area of expertise being Digital Marketing and part of a group previously called GeoLocal Media I wonder why you need assistance valuing this. I don't know why the name is not functional anymore but you must have first hand insight of the value.

Thanks DU, how cool that you registered the .io version of geolocal, were you interested in offline marketing?

I started out in local marketing back in 2001, that's where the idea came from. I had offline clients and created geolocal. com to serve those interested in local internet marketing. From there I learned CPA marketing, SEO, infoproduct development, etc. Over time I found those other things were more fun (and scalable) than working with individual clients so phased that part of it out and moved toward creating a personal lifestyle brand.

I came to NamePros because I was looking for information on how to find end users, found a post by Bannen about his process, and joined so I could ask him about it. He helped me find that mega 10 year old thread about finding end users and I've been here ever since!

I do think it's a great domain name for the right company/service, so I will focus on getting it out there so they'll know it's available. Thanks for taking the time to post your input and feedback, much appreciated!

Sharon
