does phonetic variation of a word hurt a domain's value? For example, would the domain "Jazzypix.com" be worth less than "Jazzypics.com or Jazzypicks.com"

yes, usually by quite a lot...

think of it this way:
cellphones.com vs. cellfones.com

using correct spelling is usually a crucial part of domaining (unless you are grabbing typos on purpose)

I agree, but there is that small chance it might work.

The point is
Cellfones is the domain next best to Cellphones.com
It sure is better than mycellphones.com or ourcellphones.com etc
Just like if you dont get Photos.com you have Fotos.com which gives the same sound

Fotos is the spanish spelling...

As a rule of thumb, only use alternate spellings if absolutely necessary.. they aren't searched for as much and require more tweaking to be successful.

I would certainly take "mycellphone.com" over "cellfone.com"

Why? Because many of your visitors will mis-type cellfone.com as cellphone.com - this just eats away your traffic. I have NEVER found a professional website or business using a misspelled domain.

Don't forget to take a look at plural/singular before you choose a goofy pseudo-spelling!

i don't like the phonetic variations. I suggest sticking to the normal spellings

I think pics and pix are both well accepted. pics is the shortened version of pictures or pic's. pix means the same thing, but is a shortened version that's also short for pixels. I have a lot of photo related domains, and have seen a slight preference for pix.

phonetic variations that are not in common use are probably not worth much. There are some that are common that are virtually interchangeable, and as prefiously stated, english uses photo and most other languages don't use the "PH" as an "F" sound and use foto. However, using foto will likely not get you the english speaking market as type ins or keyword searches.

another example of common use of both spellings is Disk and Disc, as in Compact Disc, floppy disk, etc.

Try to get correct spelled domains when possible at least if you are planing to sell the domains. If you need a domain for a specific site can alternative domains be fine.
