Picking a Good Domain for a Forum?

I've noticed a lot of forums are "Category" with "Forum." Such as DNF or something like that. While descriptive and stating what your website is for, I don't really feel that the word "Forum" isn't that catchy of a word. NamePros is a great domain IMO!

What do people think is a good way to pick a domain for a forum? Do you think it's better to search for a catchy domain or if available go with with "forum" and the niche word you are trying to target?

I have owned MVPForum.com for years with the thought of developing it as a sports talk site or as an addition to my MVPFitness branded gym (which I never got around to doing either - ha!)

I personally like the XXXForum.com name, especially if it flows like you suggest it might. I spend a lot of my time on various forums.

Then again, I can't sell my forum domain for anything. I've tried here and there over the years to very little fanfare. What I thought was a fantastic steal at $399 apparently was not? I guess it really is in the eye of the beholder.

Go with the keywordforum name. The reason is quite simple. People find it much easier to remember obvious names. keywordforum.com is obvious. Somebrand.com is not so obvious and will require extra promotional efforts. So buy both the plural and singular of keywordforum(s).com, pick one for your site and redirect the other one to it so that you don't loose out on typo traffic.

I own the plural version of the word in NET and ORG but someone else owns the COM. The singular version of the term has all gtlds taken, which gets a lot more searches.
Are your TLD/singular neighbors all established end-user competitors?

If yes, then i think it is best to abandon the "me too" copycat name, and find your own unique brandable identity.

If you are an end-user, the last thing you would want is to have identically confusing nemesis all fighting for the same audience traffic.

The COM is developed and the NET, ORG, INFO are owned by the guy who owns the com. Most of the other tlds and cctlds are taken. I do own one cctld.

I have considered doing a catchy name or brandable. The other companies in this niche that have gone that route don't have great traffic.
