But anyways, you have customer and developer profiles in the same list.. Some people have "total spent" while others have "total earned". And their urls are /author/..

This site is doomed by WordPress. You need so many complex things to make this work and none of them are really doable.. Can you even create an area for the project that only the customer and developer can see where discussion and updates etc happen in WP?
Please don't say you were going to just let them email each other.
