I have taught myself and my son html, but theneverything started using WYSIWYG. Now i am trying to learn php and java. Can anyone recommend a good way to learn it? Is there a "for dummies" book or a good teaching website that my son and I can learn from at the same time?

I personally started from a book. Once you have the basics you are better enabled to look through php.net and basically teach yourself how to use the functions.

Also I had an idea for a project and learnt how to program while doing the project, this way you get real world problems to solve and have a clearer idea of what you need to do.

Regarding java it is not a language I have ever looked at so can't really help there.

don't learn Java and PHP simultaneously. the concepts are entirely different though the latest PHP may have some features of JAVA. but, JAVA is a vast area. so try to learn PHP first and cover HTML, XHTML, CSS and PHP. Try to get some knowledge of domain and server management and concentrate on web technologies.
