I run into so many arguments here whether Photoshop does or doesn’t do vector graphics. It annoys me to keep telling people that Photoshop does do vector and perfectly too. I found a tutorial to prove it here . If anybody else has links to prove it please provide them here.

Is that flash supposed to do something? It just sits there.

Wrong se. There is a little button in the top left for you to press. It's called shape layers select that and you have vector. Have fill pixiels selected and you have raster.

Armstrong works fine for me. Flash 7 maybe? Maybe even quicktime inside the flash file, I dont know.

maybe true..but than again..how many logo can one designers do over and over again
with those shapes in photoshop?

as a designer originality is important...not repeated stuff....

but than i rather stick to corel draw/illustrator..lol

Everyone has there preference. This thread was just to prove that Photoshop can do vector perfectly which everyone believes is doesn’t for some strange reason. Those shape are just starting points I don’t actually use them often myself. My technique is to draw shapes on paper, scan them in and then trace over with the pen tool. Creating a perfect, unique, vector shape.

I always though it was possible :). Thanks for the link :tu:

if you ever made an image in photoshop with pen tool or anything etc it is vector, its not a posibility, its a reality.

OAS,

lol, I'm not mad now ... I know it's not the best software to do vector on, but IT DOES do VECTOR, that's the ONLY point I want to get out there to ALL Graphics Designers! :) And well with this Tutorial made by DeviartART lucky13 I have accomplished that. I should just retire, my work here is done, lol ... Just Kidding, I'm not retiring, lol ...

Regards,
Danny

PS. Gene, I see you're looking at the Board, you had said before that PS could'nt do Vector, what do you think now ;) ... Just putting you in a friendly "Spot Light" situation ;) ... No hard feelings ...

Yes, Photoshop 'can' do vector if you want to spend hours creating the same art that a program designed to create vector with can do in minutes. The problem is, you can't use most of the Photoshop tools to do it with -- which really makes it difficult to achieve what you're after. It's like saying "you can't build a house without power tools". Of course you 'can', but it won't be nearly as good of a house as you can build WITH all the tools you need, and it will take years instead of months.

My argument on another string was that someone said "I build vector in Photoshop by using 300 dpi instead of 72 so it can be stretched to a larger size without losing quality". That showed a total lack of knowledge about what a vector graphic is, and I went on to explain how a vector works as opposed to a raster image.

So the bottom line is YES, you CAN create a vector image in Photoshop, but you are VERY limited with what you can do. You can't add gradients, you can't add photographic material, you cant do any of the things you can do with a true vector program like Illustrator or Corel etc.

Why would you attempt to build a house vrom scratch with no power tools? It's nuts! :)

Photoshop is made fort raster graphics, Illustrator is made for vector.

My opinion! (along with a quarter = 25 cents) heh.

Gene,

Thanks. You are absolutely correct. I just wanted to get across the fact that you can create Vector in PS, like you stated. That's all, I know it's not the best program, but it is capable of doing Vector Art ...

Regards,
Danny

Yes very true. I agree that illustrator would be the better choice if you want to do just vector. Like logos, but never should an designer brag that they made the logo using illustrator meaning it will be better than a photoshop logo because it is a vector based program (im not saying anyone here does that).

Also you said you are very limited with vector graphics in photoshop and you cant add gradients. This is false, the only things that cant be used on vector layers are filters, such as added wind effects etc. Layer blending options are still available to any vector layer. Im sure there are nice different features in corel and illustrator. The fact of the matter is that photoshop can do vector and once created are no different or poorer to any other vector graphics.

Why would you attempt to build a house vrom scratch with no power tools? It's nuts! :)
To save money.

It can 'contain' a gradient, but the gradient will not be vector. It will be raster (bitmap). Please try to create a vector image in photoshop that contains a gradient. Even a basic square or circle. Post it here, and if I can stretch it without it losing quality, I'll eat my words. Better yet, post a vector logo here that you created in photoshop which contains gradients if you have one.

yeah..gene is right

but this could go on forever

also take into consideration, that when a logo goes for printing

t-shirts,cap,business cards

all printers prefer .pdf or .ai file

so it's of immense importance, especially if a logo is going to be used offline.

To clarify, I never said (or intended to mean) Photoshop could not do vector - I knew if could! But, it does not do it as well as I feel comfortable with. I know there is no way you can tell me Photoshop does vector design as well as say Illustrator or Flash?

Danny, you stick to Photoshop, I'll stick to Illustrator. We both win loads of contests anyway and we both can make very good logo designs, so, both our tools are obviously working well for us!

Will,

I agree completely ;) ... Just so you know, I hope you didnt take this offensive in any way, I didn't mean that. Keep up the Awsome Work will! ...

Nah, I didn't take any offense. I tried using Photoshop for vector design once, I didn't like it so I ran back to the shelter of Illustator :)
