Hi guys,
I was just wondering if someday soon, mobile browsing will ever direct the word automatically to .mobi instead of .com ?
Example
You type in games into your mobile browser, and immediately it brings you into games.mobi
If this is gonna happen, then .mobi sure is gonna get lots and lots of traffic.
Hi Aaron,
Great question, IMHO.
The first thing I would say is that as an investment proposition (in time or money terms) .mobi doesn't rely on any kind of preferential treatment - including any form of auto redirect.
I know you know this, but there are people around who would gladly jump in and imply that the .mobi case relies on continued support from its sponsors (some of which, like Microsoft, do make browsers and others - like Google and the big phone manufacturers - are theoretically in a position to redirect search queries or other traffic).
Technically it shouldn't be difficult to do auto redirects by default, but right now IMHO that would be counter-productive.
As you probably know, currently there are at least a few hundred prime generic terms that are either at the conceptual stage or are just beginning to be developed - and will have to be completed (in very strong contractual terms) within the next six months.
There are many reasons why I don't see default redirects happening universally soon, but you may want to have a look at the Sags super-acceleration scenario here for one hypothetical example of how and why it might do in certain notable cases:

Personally I'm not betting on that scenario at all, but it's an interesting proposition with great logic behind it.
IMHO .mobi is practically guaranteed to be a success without any help - barring unforeseeable circumstances in the next few months - it's only a matter of waiting for six months if we have a good excuse not to develop, or developing like crazy if we don't
If this thread becomes too heated later on, I hope you won't be put off and will stick around regardless - it's great to see more NPers re-joining the .mobi discussion lately.
