I found a name on Snap that is greyed out and says that the auction has closed. When I look at the whois, this is what I find..

Domain Status: On-hold (pending Delete)

This might sound stupid, but....is that what everyone means when they say a domain is about to drop? Is there some way I can try and get this name? And if yes, what do I have to do? I REALLY would like to have it. Thanks :)

99% probability is that Snap is going to auction off the name in Snapnames expired domain name auction. I suggest you backorder it in snapnames.com.

But when I go to Snapnames and put the name is search, it doesn't list the name at all. Not even to backorder it. Plus, from what I had found earlier, it looks as though Snap already had tried auctioning it off.

Pending Delete
What is pending delete?

Pending Delete is a status set by the WHO IS server for a domain name that has not been renewed. Domain names which expire normally get deleted. The registry will hold the name in the pending delete phase for some days. In the pending delete restorable state it is possible to recover the domain name within 30 days. The name can be recovered only by the original listed owner of the domain name in the WHO IS server. If the owner of the domain does not pay the restoration fee, then the registrar will drop the domain and it will be in the pending delete state for exactly 5 days.

If the registrar does not request the domain name to be in redemption grace period then the name automatically enters the redemption hold period where the status will be set to Pending Delete-Scheduled for Release. At this stage you cannot recover, modify or delete the domain name. It will soon be available for re-registration and so there is at least a chance of recovery during the pending delete-scheduled for release time. It is therefore strongly recommended to renew the domain name within the time limit.

Transfer requests are no longer permitted during the pending delete phase. During this stage the domain names will be removed from the Domain Name Server (DNS). However they will be available in the WHO IS with the date of deletion in the Last Updated Date Field. So a total of 35 days will be allowed for redemption period where the first 30 days will be in the pending delete-restorable stage and the remaining 5 days in the pending delete-scheduled for release stage. The registrar can use either the restore screen in the web-administrative site or the renew command with the redemption grace period extension. This will help in the termination of pending delete status and the registered name will be returned to the same status it had before the pending delete period.

During the pending delete restorable phase your domain name will be removed from the zone file. You cannot use the Internet services, including the e-mail facilities. However it will be available in the registry database. The renewal process during the pending delete phase (Restorable state) is costly and time consuming. It may take about 24 to 48 hours for the complete recovery of the domain name when it is in the pending delete phase.

It's a valuable domains that's for sure (I know which one it is) ;)

Just make sure you backorder domains at the latest at 1pm your time, that way you stand a great chance of snapping up names or at least being a participant in the auction. I think you saw this domain in the evening and by that time, it is too late as the backorder deadline has passed.

Wish you all the best for your up-and-coming auctions, especially a certain one ;)

Thanks, Luc :) It's actually because of you that I'm searching out names in the aftermarket harder than ever now. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I'll be able to report a few gems I managed to get my hands on :)

If it says the auction is closed then chances are you have already missed the drop date - Is the name a Register.com one ?

I'v seen Register.com hang onto names that did'nt get backordered, I assume they keep it for another year and try and sell it next time.

Does the current whois nameservers show: NS1.EXPIREDDOMAINS.REGISTER.COM

..but I hope I'm wrong !

Good luck :tu:

Thanks for the good luck, Gazzip :) Here is what I'm finding with a whois search today:

ICANN Registrar: DOMAINBULKREGISTRATION, LLC
Created: 2008-09-18
Expires: 2009-09-18
Updated: 2008-09-18
Registrar Status: ok
Name Server: NS1.INTERIMNAMESERVER.COM (has 88,876 domains)
Name Server: NS2.INTERIMNAMESERVER.COM
Whois Server: whois.domainbulkregistration.com

Domain Status: Registered And No Website

So I'm guessing someone else managed to snag it and I was just a little too late yesterday.

That means the domain name was Backordered. You must of seen the domain After the time you could backorder it on SnapNames.com . They grabbed the domain during "the drop" which put it into a Private Auction (or if only one backorder is in place, that person get's it for the backorder price).

If no backorders were placed, and SnapNames captured it, it would likely hit the "in auction" domains.

Thanks, Yofie :) The buyer sure was lucky, I guess I can mention the name now: AdultNovelty.com. Tons of potential there I think.

Current price

Hmmm,

Sounds like a domain I backordered two days ago. I nipped in under the wire--got notification within about 30 minutes--and am involved in the auction with about 30-40 other people, so it's not something I'm going to want enough to win.

Current bid: $1,150: 1 day/14hrs left.

Just saw last post. Yep, that's the domain. (AdultNovelty dot com)

So rest easy--that puppy's going for a lot.

1,250 now.

It will be fun to see final price.

BTW, if talking about an active auction is a no-no, let me know.
