Can a register (in this case Doster.com) renew and keep a domain for themselves once it is in "pending delete" phase?

I have been watching a domain that was showing on snapnames as dropping , I checked the whois yesterday on both whois.sc and allwhois.com and it showed the domain as PENDING DELETE on both sites.

This morning it was still showing as due to drop on snap later on, a couple of hours later and it was not, the whois now shows Email Search:domain(@)revenewdirect.com and the name{@}privacypost.com and still registered at dotster and expiry date 2011 and the domain is now parked for sale. WTH :-/

Any ideas if a register can manipulate the status of a pending delete domain? - Is that even technically possible or legal ??

I thought that once it was showing pending delete it would have to drop as it was too late for anyone to renew it :?:?

Thanks

Maybe Dotster caught it on the drop, although it does look fishy.

As far as I can tell it "should" have been dropping in the next few hours but has now mysteriously been renewed.

..it does look fishy to me :-/

If it has been renewed, then that is icky.

There is so little trust in this biz that something like this does not help.

I thought it was still possible to renew a domain if it was pending delete?(pending delete restorable) was it in this state. However there is extra cost..

My understanding: if it's pending delete, it's not renewable.

I HAVE seen pending delete restorable, but not all that often. However, I would think that within 5 days of deletion, it's NOT allowable to renew.

Perhaps gazzip should ask Dotster? Although they are not too good at answering queries (based on personal experience).

This is copied off Dotsters website - Domain Renewal | Dotster

What happens if I don't renew my domains?

1. 60-days* before your domain(s) expire will send notices reminding you to renew them. The exact expiration date can be seen in your account.
2. If the domain expires it may still be maintained in the registration database for a 5-day* grace period where it can be renewed at the normal renewal price. During this time all services such as hosting or email will not be active.

3. After the grace period it will be deactivated and placed into a 30-day* Redemption Period (Note - Some domains may not make it to the redemption period if they are purchased by a third party. Be sure to renew your domains before they enter redemption status.)

4. Once the Redemption Period has elapsed the domain may be registered by another party.

-------------------------------------------------------

As far as checking the whois records at 2 different places (one of which i also checked earlier today)the whois showed it was past the "redemtion period" and already in the Pending deletion status

.....a few hours later before the usual drop time it is'nt pending deletion

Strange :alien:

I think there is a lot of confusion stemming from the terminology.
The whois output from the registrar may say things like pending delete or pending deletion etc when it actually means redemption or grace period.
The best is to check with the registry. Looking at the creation date you can tell if the name dropped or not.

Registrar, register, registry . I sure am confused, every time I think I'v figured it out something changes  I'v bought dozens of domains from the drops at snapnames, namjet and pool over the last few years and most of the time it has been pretty straight forward, not this one.

This is what the whois said this morning (22June) using allwhois.com - whois.sc showed the same info.

At the time the domain was still showing as due to drop at snapnames with no backorders on it.

When you say its best to check with the registry where exactly do I do that? Dotster?

Thanks Kate (I was hoping you'd stop by :tu:)

Registry: VeriSign WHOIS - Domain Name Lookup from VeriSign, Inc.

Pending Deletion is supposed to mean the name has not been renewed by registrant and may be allowed to drop.
In practice the name will first be available on auction and if nobody wants to bid on it it will then be released into redemption status, (registry) pending-delete and ultimately drop.

The whois you posted says the name was created in 2002 so it hasn't dropped yet.
FYI dotster are available as prerelease at snapnames.

Thanks for the heads up. Was unsure how this worked.

PS: if you do a whois lookup at dynadot for example, it will show both registry and registrar output (for .com/.net). Makes it easier to figure out the actual status of the domain.

It looks to me like dotster removed it from the snapnames list 3 hrs before the drop and renewed it, then put it up for sale elsewhere but I'll keep an eye on it:cy: and see what happens, time will tell ;)

I'll post here later when i find out exactly whats going on.

Thanks again Kate, I'd give you some rep but they won't let me :'(
