Hey guys,

I'll be happy to admit that I am a relative noob at domaining and all, but I have eBayed since 1998 or so and never had a problem with Paypal.

Just bought 3 domains today via PayPal - I pay - receive the domains - and voila - smooth transaction.

Despite my great experience with PayPal, I am curious whether or not PayPal is 100% safe. If I pay someone $100 or $500 for a domain name, and after I pay them I never hear from them again, is there any way to get my money back? How secure is PayPal from that perspective? Thanks a lot,

- Greg

Often I have found Paypal class domains as non-tangable good. Therefore you cannot do a chargeback.

Don;t always trust the first thing that you hear!

Right - I did notice that. So what is to stop a person from saying that they are going to sell a domain, then when they get $ for the domain, they don't give up the domain? :alien:

Escrow.com,

or sedo escrow http://sedo.com/services/s_escrow.php?tracked=&partnerid=&language=us

It would depend on how much the domain is compared to the fees.

I am currently using the sedo ecrow and I guess I'll see how that turns out. The seller did not have a paypal account and was new so i suggested sedo escrow. From what I understand it is 3% of domain value.

PayPal is a 50/50 game. If you're going to be selling domains then ONLY sell to Verified PayPal members. Never sell to Unverified PayPal members, as anyone can create an unverified account in minutes to be used for scamming. While accepting payments from Verified buyers only isn't 100% safe, it sure as heck is a lot more comfortable as a seller knowing the chances of being screwed are slim.

If you're looking to assure yourself the funds with no possibility of a chargeback just use Escrow.com or accept a check/money order (make sure check clears).

Paypal is a joke. I'd set a reasonable limit on a dollar figure you would be comfortable losing... And if the transaction is more than that amount, use Escrow.com.

Simple as that. I've never had any problems either, but I try to mitigate the damages when I can.

PayPal = Only if you know the seller, the seller has good feedback, and even then... use great caution and at your own risk. (Insert "buyer" in place of "seller" above if you are the seller.)

Unfortunately, it is the standard for payments, and I'd hazard to guess that hundreds, if not thousands, originate from deals and agreements on this forum every day - but the stories and examples of bad policy on the part of PayPal and its proclivity for attracting scammers always makes me long for a better alternative.

What about all these stories that you hear about those scammer buyers that receive the domain & do a chargeback?

What happened to me a few days ago, is that the buyer/scammer used a stolen PayPal account to pay me. The actual PayPal user said the payment was unauthorized and soon as PayPal saw it was for a digital item, they immediately returned the money.

I had proof that I gave the other person the domain but PayPal didn't care and the phone support people were useless.

They randomly enforce policies and can hurt you whether you are a buyer or seller.

I have only had one serious problem with PAYPAL and that was when dealing with a MAJOR US-Based Registrar
They Refused to accept a Business Verified Paypal Transaction because I didn't give any suitable Credit Card details as well. (I had AMEX CARD at the time ,Australian Paypal Doesn't accept AMEX)

The other problem is when US Centric websites assume every one in the world has all the features of US PAYPAL available including PAYPAL debit cards (hint hint NAMEPROS)
