The scenario...you sell a domain. The buyer promptly pays you for it.You email the buyer numerous times to get their id to push the domain to them, but you get no response. You keep mailing, but no response.
The name comes up for renewal and you are still listed as the owner.
You decide to renew it.....who is the legal owner?

It depends on the sales agreement and the laws in the buyers and sellers jurisdictions. These dictate what you can and can't do, but there are really two ways to view this:
1. He paid you so the name belongs to him. If you renew it you are doing this for him as a gift.
2. He paid you but you changed your mind and decided to keep it. In this case you have to return his money.

Technically you still own the domain name. But since the buyer already paid
you, you're supposed to keep your end of the bargain (which it sounds like
you're trying to do but just need his/her information).

Is it not feasible to call the buyer?

you should make a good effort to contact him, but if no response I say it is yours, you sold it for the remaining time left on domain not for free lifetime renewals included, if he comes around then make him pay the renewal you put out and give it to him, if not its yours, personally if someone buys something and can't tell you where to push it over this time period I would have just let it drop, by renewing it he could get the idea that you are trying to steal it.

i would renew it and see if the buyer gets back to me or if i no longer wish to give time to the buyer, i would let it expire.

Used to be by letting it drop, a new create date would prove he let it drop and you aquired it legitimately. However, with the new auctions before delete that rule is partially gong now.
