It's extremely expensive to become a domain registrar. You get the point?

I believe registrar costs on .com's are about $6.40 ish... (someone correct my number, I know its off)

Frankly, many of the larger registrars make very little in terms of profit per domain. Thats why many offer additional services, like hosting, ect.

You may want to reconsider starting your own registrar, unless your portfolio holdings are in the hundred thousands.

No, but you do have to put up ~$60k to ICANN, and have about double that (if I remember correctly) in capital. Very expensive, but you don't need any domains to become a registrar. :)

You also need to build the registrar itself - which isn't cheap.

too much money and too much time on your hands are required and you need to have employed/paid staff
here's where you can start:

... And if you have enough domains to warrant setting up your own registrar, you probably have enough domains to warrant "special" pricing at many registrars. Godaddy's $6.85 on .coms with their Discount Club, that's good enough for me. The 43c difference on my ~ 2k dotcoms I would save by having my own registrar amounts to $660 -- a far cry from what it's going to cost you for a registrar. You'd need 100k+ domains for this to be viable if you weren't planning on offering registration services to others (which will drive up costs even further...) imho. Not my cup of tea. I'm happy paying Godaddy their 43c commission and will continue to do so, regardless of how many domains I ever accumulate.

most probably the way to go first, to test the waters sort of, and if cheap pricing is your goal at first.

What price do you put on securing your domains? Not having them at the whims of someone other than yourself (any registrar).

you don't make your own car to get a cheaper car, so, you will not get cheaper domain by becoming a registrar. There are many costs involved, not just financially, but time, system, manspower etc.

If your intention is to get better pricing, then your best option is to become a reseller of an established registrar. You will get domain at wholesale pricing with little capital outlay.

Do a comparsion study between: Godaddy.com, enom.com, webnic.cc, resellerclub.com.
