I’m a developer, and while I’m not a full-time domain investor, I recently had an auction experience that I think you guys will appreciate, which led to a weekend project I want to share.
Going into the weekend, I spotted an EMD dropping at auction: "free domain generator .com". Exactly 30 minutes before the auction ended, a massive drop-catching bot joined. The logs showed it was auto-bidding by $1 every minute to exhaust human bidders (its profile showed it held over 38k parked domains). I placed a proxy bid $20 higher just to test its ceiling, and surprisingly, the bot gave up. I won the EMD for $48.
Since the domain is literally "Free Domain Generator", putting a $9/mo paywall on it (like most AI wrappers do to cover API costs) felt like a scam. It had to be 100% free to use, no logins required.
To make the math work, I looked onto registrar's affiliate programs. A single domain registration commission should covers thousands of LLM API requests, keeping the tool completely free for the end user.
