Online while in flight

I just had to coolest conversation ever...talking to my best friend while she is about 40,000 feet up in midflight from Germany to California.... all in my shoutbox lol... I gueess Lufthansa is one of the first to offer internet while in flight at 30$ for the whole flight which isn't bad if you think about... specially if you can fly business class... just wanted to share the awesome expereince

that thought actually struck me today while having lunch..how can they offer internet on planes? Does it go via satellite? Do they have WLan on board? Hmmmm something to look into

they connect a very very long telephone wire to the plane and then they use a 56k modem and an WLAN to serve wireless internet to the planes 200 or so passengers. :blink:

btw running 56k and Wlan through the same line, mmmmm don't think so.

My next guess would be - they are running a MEGA WLAN 10TBit Z-standard router that can transmit data to the entire planet, encrypted ofcourse he he

It goes via satellite. I don't know what system Luftwaffe uses but the system on Cathay is relatively slow. On the order of dialup slow. But then they've had that for about five years so perhaps better technology is available now.

I must be a coward, but I would fear it interrupting with the plane and crashing. Of course, I guess you can't use it during take off/landing?
