Yes the hyphen affects value BUT very little as Most people USE SE's to find sites and SE's don't care about hyphens as much as domainers do.

I totally and Utterly disagree.
I own several pairs of names with the .com and matching .com.au
the com.au gets as much if not more international traffic as the .com
indeed several of my NET.au's gets large amounts of foreign traffic.

Too expensive ?? $45 aud ($40USD) for 2 years reg or even less. Plenty of people spend that for other investable names like .tv , .eu & so on
ALL income from selling names regardless of TLD is declarable for aussies.

Do not denigrate .com.au because you think you can't afford them.
I still standby my valuation.

.com.au are well worth registering. There's still many keyword rich domains available.

It's just restrictive as you need an ABN to register them.

They really aren't expensive. Registrars offering A$20 inc GST for 2 (two) years reg (equiv to less than US$9 pa and that's with the US dollar low against the AU - few months ago it was more like US$7pa)

barefootech's summary looks good to me - maybe a little on the high side.

I'd say $200 wholesale, $1,000 to developer/end-user

You do realise .Com.au names must be 6 months old before allowed to resell under auDA rules.
