This is the msg i got from Sedo when trying to insert olympicdarts.com:

Inserting this domain violates German trademark law. Because of that, we cannot accept this domain name at the moment.

The term 'Olympic' is trademarked by the Olympic Committee.

"Olympic" and related terms are trademarked, and they strongly enforce their mark.

Search Google for Olympic Trademark and you'll see a long history of issues.

You think darts will become an Olympic sport...? :)

I didn't realize a word could be so totally tm'd that it can't be used in any product or service.

What about names like Olympic Paints and Stains, Olympic Wire and Cable, Olympic Arms (AK-15), Olympic Boats, Olympic Tents and many more.

Is it just that darts could be a sport in the future?

No... Sedo has a filter that "olympic" anything will be rejected. You can appeal if warranted.
There are plenty of "olympic" companies and groups that have nothing to do with the "olympic committee".
"Olympic Management Systems","Olympic Flooring","Olympic Paint", etc. etc. etc.

This is good to know. I wonder if there are any other names that are automatically denied by Sedo?

If you regged the name at Godaddy, email support, ask them if you can cancel your order, explain the trademark issue and ask for a refund. I know they do this for good reasons, not sure of other registrars.

As far as US trademarks go (I assume it's somewhat similar worldwide, but could be wrong), you claim rights to a mark, usually a word or image. The thing is you have to define rather specifically (I think they have like thousands of categories to choose from), what type of business you will use it for. And then you only have a valid TM for that word or image applying to those services... So in theory, you could start one of those Microdot ice cream businesses (does everyone know what i'm talking about?) and call it Microsoft. In theory. In reality, corporations rule the world and decide what is right by paying for it.

Sedo probably has several "general" major TM terms completely blacklisted, mostly to ensure they don't run into legal issues for hosting the domain and having to go up against some major corporation that wipes their butt with the money Sedo could afford to pay in legal fees :)
