Thoughts about Office2010 (.)info ? All the surrounding TLDs are taking and the next release of Office 2010 is but a few months away.

Thinking about selling it for a decent range to finance other projects, if not develop as information portal (with monetization through software affiliate programs, eBay, etc.) for people looking for Office 2010 information.

What's your take on the value ?

Couldn't it have TM issues?

Could have issues with TM, I wouldnt have reg'd it because of that. And if i did I would try to get rid of it before paying renewal fees.

"Office" alone is not a trademark BUT microsoft has there new "Office 2010" coming out and it is highly TM'd. I would drop this name and not risj trouble. microsoft make an example of people who reg there trademarks.

Couldn't it have TM issues?

Possibly, but our goal is to use it as an enthusiast site, clearly indicating it is not an official MSFT property.

i dont think the word office have tm over it

That's true.

We caught it as a drop and will be developing it as a news and enthusiast portal.

In this case, we are not planning and sort of use that would dilute any possible trademark, and would not use it in any confusingly similar way to how Microsoft uses the Office 2010 moniker.

Thanks to all for the input!

Anyone else?

We've gone forward with the project to develop Office2010 info as a consumer enthusiast site.

Man, you're really poking the bull with this one. I mean, if you look up "Companies Likely To Pursue TM Actions Against Domain Holders" in the encyclopedia, the only thing there is a Microsoft logo.

I would guess that you might be OK under free speech precepts with some sort of enthusiasts site that is completely, 100% "monetization sterile" but if you earn one red cent off it, they might have a potential TM violation case. Adsense, banners, whatever. Before proceeding, I'd suggest posting a thread in the legal forum and see what kind of advice you get from the cognoscenti over there.

Good luck.

Thanks Dongs for the detailed feedback. I'm aware of the potential risk of building a community / crowdsourced site around a product name... especially one held my industry behemoth MSFT.

That said, there are plenty of examples of thriving user communities for a wide variety of MSFT products out there (I don't think it's necessary to cite specific examples, but a quick Bing ;) or Google search of "insert MSFT product name + blog/forum/news" will yield plenty of sites that are genuine sites and not just thin parking pages with a link to a sale squeeze.

Incidentally, we've been in the technical beta of Office 2010 for about 18 months now, and it's an impressive product ; especially the web component. Perhaps not quite the quantum leap that Office 2007 was (with the introduction of the ribbon navigation system to replace the ubiquitous menu interface) over 2003... but it's pretty significant nonetheless. Many corporate shops are probably going to go forward with a rollout of the 2010 iteration of the Office suite of products now that the 2007 version has matured.

Thanks again to all for the feedback.

A complete waste of time. Stay miles away from this name.

Wasted reg. Why bother? This is zero at best.

Disclaimer: Please keep in mind that this is a FREE appraisal. This is a guess at quick flip resale value not an unrealistic end-user price. Often times my appraisals are rushed, too low, or too high. Sometimes my advice is totally wrong and occasionally downright dumb. If the post stamp is after 5:00pm EST, the chances are even greater that inaccuracies will occur due to blood alcohol levels.

Thanks for all the feedback - it's all appreciated and further (constructive ;)) criticism or suggestions are most welcome!

Rob

P.S. FWIW, 2010.info sold for about $230 about a month ago on Sedo.

The difference is 2010.info is a year, Office2010.info is a TM infringement if you step around the Microsoft ground at all and for any other non TM use it is worthless..

Enthusiast site may be ok until you start monetizing.

Even without monetizing, you could have a problem.
I aquired Xeroxsoft.com in a portfolio some time ago; but it wasn't long before the Xerox Corporation sent me the legal email demanding the name, even though I had not done anything with it.

Beware !!!

Well my english sucks, but IF Office 2010 wasnt announced, theres no problem about that name. No TLDs if he was the first to register that name!! just because microsoft have a software with that first name, doesnt mean that they can argue Office 2020 its from Microsoft too!!

Thats my opinion. So, if somebody register my enterprise name and it worth millions, dont forget to give to me because its TLDs too. lol

Slightly off topic here, but I was wondering if anyone has started using Office 2010 yet? I got the MSDN Techical Review copy yesterday and am busy using it, and I must say it seems great :)

Anyone else using it? :)
