Obama: Muslim or Not? - do you really care?!?!

Am I the only one wondering why Obama's possible connection to Islam is such a big deal? Aren't we supposed to be a country where freedom of religion is guaranteed by our pride and joy: the Constitution. Where does it say that only Christians are allowed to be the president? Have I missed something?
Oh, and by the way, I am a practicing Catholic (ironically, just like Bush ...)

I am wondering the exact same thing Ivoy. First of all, he isn't even a Muslim, he swore his oath on a Bible. Secondly, why does it matter? It's just a double standard that takes me to the verge of puking. Religion 1: Campaign on it, and make the candidate look good in the fact that he/she's religious. Religion 2: Trace family history, hook up with the candidate's grandma in Kenya, run prime time reports on how the candidate went to a MADRASA! Oh my goodness! What does a MADRASA mean? Oh, apparently it's SCHOOL. Can't had a president who went to school can we?

The man goes to church, he swore on a Bible, what else do you want him to do to prove his Christianity. Actually, why DOES he have to prove his Christianity? I don't see any other candidate being questioned on their religion.

Like .. what gives?

Read the news, it has already been confirmed he is not a muslim. That was a fabricated story that Fox proadly broadcasted and once CNN confirmed he was not a muslim they took it back.

Look at his backround, he worked most of his life on improving his church community.

I do read the news, you just missed the point of my question :)

This is what gets me: people are outraged over Reverend Wright and they STILL think he's a Muslim. Do they even know who Reverend Wright was? Some people are just so ignorant, I wonder if they live in caves.

And ivoy, Bush is not Catholic. He is Evangelical. And we've only ever had one Catholic President, John F. Kennedy. All of the others have been forms of Protestants.

Surely someones personal religious beliefs shouldn't have any influence over whether they should/could be president or not. Why do people care about something so unrelated to the task at hand?

My bad - I was referring to being Christian in general.

A couple of things, My understanding is, you can not just denounce the Muslim religion, Obama did attend Muslim school, his middle name is Hussein, If Cassius Clay could change his name to Muhammad Ali, Then Obama could have changed his name to denounce that he has no Muslim ties.

In the case of a Muslim, being the President of the USA, It makes a lot difference, "In God We Trust". Muslims do not believe in God

Utter rubbish.

Muslims worship Allah. Allah translated into English means God.

Christians and Catholics in those regions actively call God Allah as well.

Do some research on christianity and the muslim faith and you will find they have the same roots.

They never said Obama was practicing the Muslim religion, they said of his father being Muslim, and Obama attending a Muslim school. Although he doesn't currently practice the Muslim religion. there is a strong possibility he may still support the Muslim religion.

Yes, Allah is the "Muslim God" they do not believe in the Holy Bible, nor the God that pertains to the Holy Bible, so it's not rubbish.

Go read the bible and see where the propet Mohammed originated from. Muslim is essentially an offshoot of christianity much like catholosism and jehovas witness' are.

I still run into people around here who've heard at church that Obama is a Muslim .. even my COUSIN sent me an email stating that we shouldn't vote for him because he's a Muslim. Of course my cousin is an idiot anyway ;)

Even if Obama was a Muslim (which he isn't), I could care less as long as I feel he'll make a good elected official. Right now, I think he's the better of the three.

It makes no difference:

Article VI, section 3 of the US Constitution states that:
โ€œ ...no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States."

Why don't you actually read what's in the Constitution?

From Wiki:

A Muslim is an adherent of the religion of Islam. The feminine form of 'Muslim' is Muslimah. Literally, the word means "one who submits to God". The word "Muslim" is the participle of the same verb of which "Islam" is the infinitive.[1] Muslims believe that there is only one God, translated in Arabic as Allah. Muslims believe that Islam existed long before Muhammad and that the religion had evolved with time from the time of Adam till the time of Muhammad, and was completed with the revelation of verse 3 of Surah Al-Maeda.

Looks to me like they believe in God. Maybe not the way we do, but I believe true Muslims are just as spiritual as true Christians.. we can't judge the entire religion based on the fundamentalists.. any more than we should judge all Christians based on Falwell or the 700 Club.

Thanks painperdu, for clearing that up with an actual quote. I will also add one referring to the Bible:

When questioned what the greatest commandment is, Jesus is portrayed by the Gospels of Mark (12:28โ€“34) and of Matthew (22:34-40) as stating that the first two commandments, and the greatest, are:

- One should love God with one's entire heart, soul, mind, and strength
- One should love one's neighbour as one would love oneself

Nowhere in the Bible does it say: "Hate, fear and kill anyone, who's not Christian" - and making generalizations about an entire region of the world just because they pray differently is really a sign of utter ignorance...

I really don't think its a matter of religion when it comes to running for the President of the US. The question is can Obama be a great president and restore the confidence of other countries in believing in USA again. I would have to say Obama is the man who can bridge the gaps from other nations that had distant themselves from the current administration. I believe he will be a great president because he can relate to the common people and the elites here in the US and around the world. In addition, he has served his community and represented his home state as a senator. That means that he worked hard to be where he is today and was not given any special treatment.

Its funny how those who are agains Obama, both uses his fathers muslim religion and in the same breath Obama's connection to christian priest Rev. Wright :)

So decide what is he? a muslim or a christian who went to Rev. Wright's church, in I dont know how many years. :)

And just to clear something up.

- muslims do believe in the bible (or at least the part of the bible that is The Old Testament). The new testament is based on humanmade writings/thoughts from the apostles who followed prophet Jesus and by Paulus who even didnt meet Jesus in real life, but only heard stories about him. Because of this the muslims do not see the new testament as a holy writing.

- muslims believe in that their God is the same God as Christianity and Judaism. All three religions are monotheistic religions which believe in ONE God.

- muslims believe that Jesus and all the other prophets mentioned in Christianity and Judaism also are there prophets.

- muslims believe that because of humanmade errors in the former holy writings, the holy Quran was sent to all humans through prophet Muhammed, to correct these errors once and for all give all humans guidelines to what to do and how to behave. Of course God has allowed/give us free will, so we can do what we want, even go against his guidelines, as that is what they are a guide to be a better humanbeing, but if we dont follow the guidelines, then we must accept the consequences after we are dead.

Sorry if this got a bit serious :)

Best regards,
