news nTLDs cross the 4 Million Registrations Mark

Overnight zone file updates indicate nTLDs have now made the 4 Million Registrations mark. This was quickly following the 3.5 Million Registrations milestone met only this past December 11th 2014..how did happen so quickly? There is a catch:

Isn't it arguable that .XYZ, .berlin, .realtor, and .ovh were/practically given out for free to get these numbers? As I'm in the US and have not been following registrations of the Chinese market, they as well could have been dumped. By that, I mean for $1 or so.

A theory of how this happened after seeing even Afilias dump .red, .blue, .pink and .black for pennies on the dollar to climb above the 10k mark after December 11th.
