The US government, via NTIA, has a comment period (that closes on Tuesday) on the topic of International Internet Policy Priorities, which includes domain names, ICANN, GDPR, and so on. My submission (finished last night) can be read at:

Judging by the way .us has been run I doubt that NTIA has any interest in fixing the system
