As there are a few nationalities and people living in different countries here would it be easy to have an "NP time". It would be a standard time that peopel could use for auctions , i.e when they end, and it could be displayed at the top near the area where the chat info is displayed or somewhere like that.
It could solve problems like people arguing over who won an auction as someone though it were GMT, someone EST and someone didnt +/- on the GMT . would stop confusion over that!
Anyone else think it would be a good idea?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

You mean a new timezone like GMT?

It could make for good use, plus stop confusion. I am up for it.

Ditto...but now the question arises, what time should NamePros go by? GMT, EST, etc...

Better yet, why not just have something that shows the time in your own timezone which is already definable via your members area ;)

I personally am opposed to the idea, it would generate a lot of confusion. Instead of saying "5:00 NP time", why not say "5:00 GMT" or "5:00 EST"?

Rmwebs' sounds to be very suitable -- have the auction time post thing look for the time zone set in your profile, and guests can be set in EST or something.

If you're creating an auction, it would be easiest post the time zone the auction ends in. ;)

If you just post that it ends in 72 hours or 3 days then just look at the time you see when it was posted and add 72 hours or 3 days to it. Then you know what time it ends in your timezone.

I have a basic time zone script on my worldstats.info - free from javascriptkit,
you can set it up for any different timezone.
maybe it can be implemented into the site somewhere so people can use it to check the timezones for the auctions.
Just a thought.

B33r...soory I wouldnt of posted if Id of known it was your idea first! im sure ive seen the idea before but i thought it was on another forum!

Some of you dont see my point... alot of the time there is confusion over the time...a standard time would make it alot easier because then people couldnt say things like "oh i meant for it to end at 9PM GMT not EST" (to make more money)

and the time zone could be the timezone with most users?

I'd like to see the NP time be UT (Universal Time, same as GMT) since NamePros has members from all over the world. :)

No problem, it's nice to see this idea again. :)

I don't know why some people don't see the need, maybe they just don't read all the posts of people who messed up on the times and missed out. Or the, let's say "corrupted", sellers who get a better offer after the deadline, by someone confused over time, which they then accept...

Swimjenni's idea is good, unfortunately most people don't do that.

In all honesty, I think most of us are at a loss of words on this one.

A universal time would have it's advantages, no doubt. But it also has it's disadvantages, most notably being something EXTRA for many members to remember. So while the objective of this universal time is to simplify, the end result for many folks is the opposite.

Personally, like has already been suggested above, I've always used... "Auction ends 72 hours from this post"... or whatever the amount of days, broken down in hours. That way everybody can look at their own clock and make a quick easy measurement.

I agree with -db-
A NamePros time would be quite confusing. It is just as easy to look at the timestamp.
Here's another idea. A bbcode tag that would post the right time in the person viewing's time zone. This would take some work to do though.

or what about the Greenwhich mean time. (GMT) that is the standard time.. every time should be in GMT.

It always says the time in GMT (you can look up top right now.. 11PM GMT) and that should be enough. Everyone should know their offset, so it would be pretty basic to figure out what time for your timezone.

A countdown would be fine...When a auction is starting soon.

That cuts out all confusion.

I think that a countdown that starts when the thread is posted will be the best option here, too, :imho:. I thought about a universal NP time also, and though it certainly has it's advatages, as -db- said, there's disadvantages too.

It wouldn't be hard to create a modification that means the seller has to put in the length of time the auction will last for, and to display a live countdown in the first post.
