I keep seeing people ask for an appraisal, and then offer NP Bucks for a "good", "great", or "quality" appraisal. I normally don't see most members ask for an "HONEST" appraisal when asking this. In my opinion, it seems as though people are asking for a favorable appraisal, whether the domain name deserves it or not. I don't think they are offering NP Bucks, for a negative appraisal.

Recently, www.NamePros.com installed a new rule stating you should not offer to give "reps" for appraisals. In my opinion, we should not be allowed to offer NamePro bucks. I feel this way, because I don't think anyone honestly would be offered NamePro Bucks for a negative appraisal. I think this would also help make www.Namepros.com a even better forum, with a more honest, and true appraisal system.

What do you think, and how do you feel about this. Maybe I am wrong. If I am, please let me know.

Frank

I agree with you knarfmusik 100%.

I would rather someone told me that my domain name is crap rather than just give it a high xx appraisal to gain NP$.

If it is crap just say so, I for one will not take offence as it is myself that is asking you all for an appraisal , not just a fob to my ego (ie) great name, high xxx.

If people are appraising honestly then it will benefit the whole site

That way I/We (newbies) will learn what is good to register and what is not.And also we will learn more of the value of domains so as we can make more informed offers on domains and sell at more informed prices.

Just blatantly giving a good appraisal just to get NP$, will actually cost newbies (like me) more money because we will just go out and reg more crap names because we will not know any better.

I know that appraisals are all subjective but only a fool would not listen to the advice of the more senior members on here who have been doing this for years and most importnatly doing it successfully

If people want to pay to get appraisals with $NP, that is what the $NP is for. Let them spend $NP. I can understand REP points though, that is why they are separate points. If someone wants to spend $NP to hear good things about the domain name then let them. If they want REP points, then No.

$NP is a currency here equivlent to money apparently. So it should be treated as such. While I agree that it hurts newbies, if they want to spend $NP, they'll learn the hard way from there wallet and in the future ask for negative or positive appraisals and pay both.

Anybody else with an opinion on this, perhaps some of the more senior members ?

I dont think I would call myself senior, but I would put forward the opinion that the people who will post soley to gain NP$ are generally the sort of people you dont really need posting in your threads.

I think the NP$ given to the appraisers should be in the hands of the thread starter.e.g. is he is satisfied with someones appraisal, he can recommend him to be paid with the hel of one click, however, if he feels that the person wasnt serious in the appraisal or was joking or fooling around, he should also have the power to recommend deduction of his NP$, this will make the appraisal section of namepros..... THE BEST!

Allow the exchange of Rep for Appraisals but prohibit the exchange of NP$ for Appraisals....

I dont have any of either so maybe I'm wrong but from what I've read this would make the most sense.

Cheers.

I agree with GreenGambler.

I don't see the point in either being used.

You can already give NP$ and rep at your discretion (without advertising it).
Offering rep will just get us back where we started. Everyone will be offering rep and the situation will be the same.

There's just too many people looking for appraisals and not enough appraisees (real word? lol)

We got enough people doing appraisals for post counts and the 2NP$. No needs for more spam.

BTW

RegFee :D

I personally think that openly offering a direct reward for appraisals can attract lower quality appraisals from less experienced or knowledgeable members of the community. If a payment is offered then certain standards have to increase to meet them in return, and I cynically doubt they will.

I know I wouldn't want to offer (as an example) 10NP for comments on a domain if I just got twenty people popping in to say "reg-fee, money now".

I do agree that some kind of change is needed, because this section of the board does not seem to be as thriving or respected as others. I have my own little idea for this, it's quite simple:

Implement a new ranking or point system for appraising. As a socially acceptable standard, people asking for appraisals should reward valid and useful responses with an addition to this separate reputation.

But back on topic, here is how I see it. Earnest and genuine people asking for appraisals are willing to add to reputation and perhaps voluntarily donate a small token in exchange for an appraisal. Even though this isn't allowed to be openly stated, it's common courtesy and practice. If more people were aware of this, they may be more verbose in their replies.
