can someone give me a good example of what a good voip domain name would be ?
Here's a little case study that will give you some insight into the timeframe that is involved in attempting to identify and register the "next set of domain names that will blow up ?"
2 yrs ago, in the middle of 2004, I began registering "mobi" domains based upon the *possibility* that ICANN would 1) approve a gtld for mobile related use and 2) would choose to go w/ the ".mobi" name as the extention, (at the time, mobi was only the working name). "mobi" registrations were an, obvious, risk because neither the gtld or a name had been approved. Despite this, when I began searching, I wasn't first in line. "mobi" had already been registered in all of the tlds most of the top cctlds and many of the best keyword domains had already been taken in the .com ext.
During .mobi's "second wave" registration period, I was able to get some of the keywords cominations that I wanted in .net and other exts. (eg mobicell.net, mobicellular.net and mobiphone.org.)and landed some strong keyword .coms (eg mobimp3.com, mobisales.com, mobibusiness.com, mobisecurity.com, mobidirectory.com)
In retrospect, there are some other names that I could have picked up but I have to remind myself that 1) at the time mobi was still a chancey proposition and 2) (hopefully), my eye for a good name has improved over the past 2 years.
After it was announced that .mobi had been approved, I jumped in w/ the third wave of registrants and, beaming w/ confidence, I registered a few more .mobi names, which brings us around to VOIP. 2 years ago, VOIP was already old news and was in a "wave 4" registration period. (Following the "wave" construct, "Wave 4", is the registration period that begins when general public awareness begins to rise.) I was able to pick up a good VOIP name, MobiVOIP.com, long after VOIP had been mined because I could combine it w/ a term that was still early in it's registration cycle.
Even so, I had doubts about the name's potential because during it's first year at Sedo, it went barely noticed. It wasn't until the beginning of 2006 that traffic started to pick up and March saw a substantial upward spike in traffic. Based on this months visits and the monthly rise over the past 3 mos it should avg about 10 visits a day. 300 visits/mo is a puny number by ppc standards but is cause for optimism from a development standpoint.
There are still some good avail mobi names out therebut you'll have to hunt. Recently, (2mos ago?) I picked up 2 keyword combinations that work well together, IMO: mobihifi.com and hifimobi.com.
The following 2 threads go into newer terms that may have potential:
