With the help of WhoisXML API’s Newly Registered Domain (NRD) Database, we analyzed more than 4.6 million NRDs added between 1 and 31 January 2022. Our findings may aid in making critical domain investing decisions, including what domains to add to your portfolio, which ones to let go of, and how much to sell them. Our key findings include:
  • Most of the TLDs that topped our December 2021 analysis still made it to the top 10 TLDs of January 2022 NRDs.
  • The .com TLD continues to lead the top 10 TLD extensions.
  • Commonly used terms can be categorized into generic tech, digital currency-related, and gaming-themed terms.
We provide more details about each finding below.

Top TLDs Used by January 2022 NRDs

The .com TLD remains the top TLD worldwide, accounting for 63% of the new domains registered in the first month of 2022. To recall, it was also the top TLD in previous months, including December 2021.

After .com, .xyz and .net retained their ranks, taking the second and third spots, respectively. The rest of the top 10 TLDs with the most domain registration activities were .cyou, .icu, .online, .site, and .info. All of them, except .site, were also on the top 10 TLDs list for December 2021. The chart below shows the NRD distribution among the top TLDs for January.

Common Terms

We also analyzed a sample of the NRDs comprising more than 100,000 domains to see the most commonly appearing text strings. The terms are reflected in the word cloud below. We further provided some insights that could be relevant to decision-making processes.

Most of the repeatedly used text strings are related to the following:
  • General tech: Text strings relevant to the Internet and technology were prevalent, along with those related to online shopping. These terms include “shop,” “tech,” “login,” “app,” “home,” and “web.”
  • Digital currency: Terms, such as “coins,” “crypto,” “eth,” “ether,” and “ada,” suggest unabating interest in digital currencies.
  • Gaming: Examples of terms related to gaming were “VR,” “games,” and “discord.”
Interestingly, we noted the presence of “soulmate, ” which could be related to Valentine’s Day. Examples of second-level domains that use this text string are “soulmate-coach,”soulmatesketch,” and “modasoulmate.” On the other hand, “beauty” and “nyx” could suggest a trend toward purchasing beauty-themed domains.
