If it's a .com, 81days. But will have to run quite a gauntlet of opposing forces before it actually drops.

Depends on the registrar I'd say, there are some variations and lets not forget that the registrar might not even release the domain, making it available for normal registration again. If they find value in it you might as well seek to backorder it somewhere.

But generally @stub is absolutely correct. Once the domain expires you have around a month (30-40 days) of grace period to renew it on a normal pricing. Then you have another 40-45 days or so called a Redemption Period when the domain can still be redeemed but for a much higher fee. After that it enters the Pending Deletion phase which is normally 5-7 days and the domain goes back on the market.

Hope that clears the air a little. :)

The most common model, followed by most of the big registrars, is up to 45 days for normal renewal, but some registrars charge more before the 45 days is complete, then on the 46th day the domain is given back to the registry for a 30 day Registry Redemption Period, then it goes into Pending Delete for 5 days when nobody can renew it. Then on the 6th day it drops. 45+30+5+1= 81 days. These days are basically set in stone by ICANN. It's only how an individual registrar handles things up to the 45 day mark which differs.

One exception is how 1and1 handle this. They don't give you any renewal period at normal renewal rates and delete the domain after 30 days.

Refer https://archive.icann.org/en/registrars/gtld-lifecycle.jpg to view a chart explaining the stages a domain generally passes through prior to being released. However, each registrar may have a slightly different approach for releasing domains. We would recommend asking your present registrar or reviewing their documentation.
