Hello to all of you .. My name is Tammy Wishoun and I am interested in learning domaining.. I do not know what I am doing and would love any advice you could give me..I have read the Intro for the Newbies and understand some but am still confused on how to get started.. I do understand what a domain name is and what parking, developing, and reselling are to an extend.. but getting started is where I am having my biggest problem.. where to go to get started and what to look for in a good name.. and then once I get the name where to go to resell.. My son has been a member of NamePros for years and he suggested that I join up and get acquainted with this forum..learning how to network and get advice from others.. He is letting me learn on my own so that way I will remember and know what to do next time.. He is leading me and helping me in areas but he wants me to find out how to buy and sell on my own so I can continue on my own..Any help from you would be much appreciated..

Thank you,

Tammy Wishoun

Welcome Tammy. Just like real estate...Location, location, location (.com,.net.org) and country domain extentions that you are familiar with (.us - united states for me) along with keyword, keyword, keyword is what I would recommend. It is better to start with a couple of good ones than a whole bunch of bad ones that you end up trying to sell for under registration fee with no takers. Just read threads where others have sold names and see what they sold and for how much they sold for. A pretty good site to look up some past sales (doesn't include private sales and shows a small percentage of sold names) is Namebio.com. You'll have to learn which ones are the good ones by doing your own due diligence. Good Luck :)

Many new domainers come into the industry excited about the prospects of making easy money and start registering low-quality domains which a year or two later they come to realize are worthless. Focus your effort initially on learning what constitutes a good domain. Try to limit your registrations/backorders to two-word .COM domains or one-word .Nets with commercial value. The ideal situation is that the phrase is one with decent search volume using Google Adwords Keyword Tool. But don't overemphasize search volume and forget to use common sense. Why would a company or development group pay money for this domain? Are there companies advertising in Google or Yahoo for this phrase? Note that Afternic indicates that in 2008, nearly 80% of their domain sales were .COM and about 15% .Net. So don't go wild registering domains in other extensions. Afternic also reports that the median .COM sales price in 2008 was $1350 with .NET at $816. Don't expect to register a domain for $10 and be able to sell it a week later at $5000. Reviewing the drop lists at Snapnames and Namejet can be an OK source for names but realize more than 99% of drops are junk. Be careful. The best source of quality domains is other domainers. But a newbie can't utilize this method yet because you can't start offering $250 for domains until you can distinguish what is a great domain from a so-so one. Study DNJournal's weekly sales list to see the types of keyword phrases that command big dollars. Domaining is not easy. Best of luck.

:D

She finally joined!

My best advice (which I have already given) is to read all you can about domaining from this forum and sites like DNJorunal.com ... and getting involved in the community of domainers.

The best place to do this? Well, you are here... NamePros. In my opinion, there is no better community of domainers.

If you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to ask in this Domain Newbies section or ask me directly.

Welcome to NP ;)

Welcome to NamePros. My advice would be invest wisely, and be picky about what you invest in. Ofcourse you do have to take a few risks sometimes, but try to keep your risks at a low.

Simple advice: assume your domains are not going to sell.
Register domains in a niche that you are familiar with, and that you can develop if they won't find a buyer...

Domaining is akin to starting a new job when you have no idea what you are doing until one day everything falls into place. You will make mistakes, you will buy domains that are totally useless until you recognise what sells and what doesn't.

Although difficult to resist, try not to follow fads and hype unless you really know what you are doing. There are a lot of people who have pumped money into hyped up newly released extensions etc who have lost a lot.

Don't think you are going to get rich over night (or anytime for that matter) domaining. There are a small minority of domainers that have made it big, these are mainly people who had the foresight to buy early in the dot com era and had many of the great keywords that eventually made their fortunes.

Take it slowly, buy sensibly, go with you gut ( whatever the thought that comes to mind first is usually the right way to go) and enjoy!

It is good to read and learn and I suggest you do that, but somethings you are going to learn when you start investing in names.
I would just advise you to take it slow, buy a few 2-3, and try to sell them before you go onto more domains!
Good luck with your future endeavours and welcome to Namepros!
