Hey guys - Just a quick thread about .london domains.

Did anybody else get priority applications in and how far along are you? What is your view on the potential of this extension?

I stuck in 15 priority applications for some generic keywords, 1 of which Fasthosts couldn't get for me and 10 more of which were also applied for by other parties. I'm just at the point at which you submit which level of priority you're on for those 10 - presumably most will end up going to bid.

Cheers in advance ~ M

Did anybody apply for any similar locality based extensions or have any successes with sales?

I've applied for 3 but haven't heard anything back, not sure what to do or ask?

Further on down the line: I've now successfully secured a couple as they were presumably uncontested - not sure about where to flog them though. Equally, I guess the value will be a grey area?

One turned out to be a trademark too - not sure how i missed that!

I am normally against jumping head first in the TLD's just for the sake of it. I believe most early adopters are more likely to pay dearly for their curiosity while the more experienced domainers just wait patiently to see how will things evolve. After all, the more realistic statistics can be gathered at least an year after their release so that we can see how many of the newly registered domains are renewed.

That being said, I am always keeping an eye on updated statistics of the domain registrations with the new TLD's. It seems .berlin is doing rather well so far so the more localized extensions seems to work well for local usage, just like their country-specific counterparts. Its still risky but if you are a wizard in marketing you can always think of a good strategy and monetize them well.

.berliin had a free giveaway that saw almost 70,000 registrations. I think there were other low pricing deals as well.

See, one can learn something new every day, I was unaware of that fact. Still it looks to me that it would be easier to monetize such a domain to some local business instead of trying to convince people that .guru is so hip it will become the new .com one day :D

The problem is that domain registration statistics are no longer reliable. Some zonefiles are being padded to make them look like they have more registration activity than they really have. The robo-registration issue with .XYZ where domains are being "given" to Network Solutions registrants for free has massively inflated that zonefile count. The .BERLIN gTLD ran a free domain name scheme that was massively abused by cyberwarehousers and it had to stop that scheme after a few days. Some other new gTLDs have large sets of domains that are owned by registry affiliated companies. Many new gTLDs are struggling to break the 100 registrations a day barrier. Now some new gTLD fans might claim that there are over 2 milllion new gTLD domains registered but that is highly misleading. The reality is that apart from a few gTLDs most are only slowly gaining registrations.

Oh absolutely, even the term "keeping an eye" I am using rather loosely. I am a sucker for statistics so just update myself with some information, while leaving the pioneer-wannabees fight it out. Before the first year of TLD release has passed I don't like to make any kinds of conclusions and base the advice I give off of them :)

I am no expert here either and I don't have that much experience as a domainer in general, but I must say I believe .London will be great success in no time.. The way London and surrounding area have developed in recent years (Businesses who are looking for local recognition) + Not willing to spend well overpriced price tags for some .coms / .net and others, and there are only so many of them available WorldWide too..

No I haven't picked up any of .london domains my self, but had request on sellers behalf to sell employment.london at MarketforDomains.com marketplace couple days ago and have had some interest already from few sources who are considering offer they would be willing to make.

It seams hard to place any valuation upon new TLD, but surely where there is competition buyers will be determined to go that exstra further to beat closest competition, right ;)
