Didn't see this one coming.... quote from godaddy

Fee charged by ICANN

This mandatory fee is charged by ICANN (Internet Corporation For Assigned Names and Numbers: www.icann.org). and becomes effective on November 1, 2004. It is 25 cents per domain name registration year. Thus, the fee on a one year .com registration would be 25 cents. The fee would be 50 cents for a two year registration (i.e. 25 cents times 2). Additional years would be at 25 cents per year.

ICANN fees apply to .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, and .name.

just because they do so much work? I guess it is nice to have someone oversee the domain "guidelines" but this is what happens when more and more people get involved. The best part is that they control the prices and their bottom line... and their raises each year with no one to stop them - that is nice. ICANN should only get paid when someone files a complaint or their help is needed - other than that the rules are laid out and most user never contact them for anything.

how do you expect them to pay exopenses etc on what I can only imagine to be very expensive servers, plus the sot to pay their staf,

does this money magically appear from thin air.

Take a look at the domain prices from a few years ago and then come back and try to claim they are overpriced.

Dont hold me to this but I believe ICANN is an international organization and is funded accordingly. The problem is that they offer no flexibility to the internet for growth and are more of a big bully to businesses and obsolutely no help for the average user who started the internet.

I really dont care about the .25 c because I dont own 1000's of names but its a starting trend that should be stopped now before the next .50 c raise.

It's not costing any more for domain registrations with GoDaddy. Notice that the price per year says $8.70 and it was $8.95 before, that's the quarter difference right there. They are just separating the ICANN fee from their own prices, but it's not going to cost anything different than it did previously.

I dont like it because GoDaddy does not add it into their fee right away but they add it at checkout. I guess thats why Godaddy's coupon is 6.70

BUT if look at the prices they are sale prices

Hmm, Has this applied to other registrars yet?

I believe the fee has gone from $.05 to $.25 with this year's ICANN budget. They have built international offices and increased staff. They have also been involved in defending against lots of lawsuits, a high number being from Verisign.

What fee, specifically? I thought ICANN already receives the base $6 per domain/year that it costs registrars to reg each domain. Or does this $6 go to the registry, and not to ICANN?

Increase looks reasonable to me and somehow liked the way GD handles this increase. *cheers*

Registry (Verisign, Neustar, etc.) get the $6. Icann, was getting $.05 per domain plus an annual registry and registrar fee.

Your gonna see the the registrars start seperating the ICANN fee. It's a way to make another nickel out of every sale without "officially" raising their prices.

This happened because of that monsterous ICANN budget that passed.

Topping that list of accomplishments, according to ICANN Chairman Vint Cerf, was the group's approval Friday of its fiscal year 2004-2005 budget, which is set to grow from US$8.3 million this year to $15.83 million for the period covering July 1 to June 30, 2005.

almost $16 million, to come from our quarters - think about what they don't do with it...

In that case, IMO this fee increase is reasonable. Perhaps with more $, ICANN can be in a better position to control Netsol abuses, establish UDRP panels that are fair to all concerned (not overly favoring corporate complainants), and punish erring registrars.

Let's hope ICANN uses the money to go after such blatant abuses, too, then!
