New extensions charging high annual renewal rates

Perhaps I don't get it. Maybe I don't see how expensive it is to maintain these new extensions. But why the high annual rates for select names (usually short or desirable names)? Have they not learned from dot com that has the same renewal rate for x.com as it is for chinomenal.com? Some new extension rates more modest at $120 even $600. But it gets ridiculous at $55,000 and I saw one for over $100,000 a year.
