I just recently purchased a Notebook computer and have been having difficulty setting up a file/printer network. I have a Wireless Router and an ADSL modem connected to the main PC and planned on using that as the network hub. I have both computers setup with the same Workgroup name and have disabled the XP firewalls.

The internet connection sharing works fine as it's done so via the Router but it won't let me access my files on either one of the computers. They can see each other when I view the computers on the workgroup list but they say that they cannot find the connection.

Any tips or online tutorials to help?

The PC has Pro, the notebook as Home.

File and Print sharing may not be on.

Put your XP disk in, when the menu launches for the cd, choose something like other services, than choose install file and printer sharing.

Once you have done that on both machines, search for the computer name in my network places. That's what I had to do and it worked. Good luck!

You are living in Canada, is your host Bell Sympatico? Because mine is, and I got a Networking Modem. I connected my laptop with the PC by using the modem, and I too had the same problem. I could not access the files of each of the computers from the other computer. So, I formatted my laptop and put Windows XP Pro, which is real good for networking. And then, I ran the Home Network Wizard (found in the Network Connections folder) on both of the computers. After that, the problem was solved.

I too have file and printer sharing. But the only way that I would suggest out for you is to run the Home Networking Wizard found on both Pro and Home version of XP. After that, you should be able to use the network. Also, the files you are sharing, you should have their permissions set to as shared, and accessible for the networked computer. For the printer, all you have to do is install it's driver as soon as the network is set up. You will have to locate the printer from the network, and then Windows XP will ask you if you want it to install the drivers.

That should be it. I hope this is helpful.
