Need Ideas for Getting Recipes Contributed

I started developing a site called breadaroundtheworld.com. I used a gallery template to simply display pictures of bread, and want to provide pictures, info and recipes for all the kinds of bread from around the world.

No monetization plans at the moment, but I need a way to attract contributors to send pictures and recipes from around the world- without spending a fortune.

Any brilliant ideas? Rep will be given (I can afford that!)

i assume a recipe site like this is meant for chefs who are anxious to try new recipes - how about set up a recipe exchange type section where for every recipe that you submit, you get a unique recipe from a different part of the world to try out yourself at home? you may need to get some of your personal friends and family to contribute recipes initially (assuming you are starting with 0), but that method is possible. good luck!

Give it a "contest" spin and feature the best one you get every [week | month] on the home page - everyone loves their 15 minutes of fame (no matter how small). If you want to fill particular categories, make each one a contest for breads from a different place. Get active on social sites and cooking/recipe forums and promote it.

You will have to "seed" the site with some recipes to start - nobody will submit to an empty site.

At the end of the day with a site like this you need to be giving something back to the user. Would you spend 10minutes listing a recipe to a site you have never heard of or looks "new" and "unpopular".

A contast is a good idea, maybe they could win a bread making machine. You can then submit it to a lot of contest sites and hopefully you will get submissions other than that its a tough industry to get into because of the current sites. It's like starting a video site....theres no way you can because of Youtube.

Thanks for the comments. They all pretty much suggest providing a reward, which makes sense. I'm going to think over what and how.

Cheers.

a reward is the way to go - it's just up to you if you want to spend money on the reward or make it some sort of no-cost-for-you thing.

if you can't afford prizes but still want to use them, perhaps you could write to some companies asking for some free stuff you can give away, and in return you'll place their name (basically, advertise) for them on your site.
