Need help with a specific drop catch

Hi all,

I used to be a very active domainer and NamePros contributor. But I've been out of the game for years, and I could use some up-to-date advice.

I'm trying to do a favor for a friend and catch a .org that their organization used to use. They accidentally let it lapse, and someone else grabbed it and renewed it once or twice. It's now fallen into pending delete status.

This domain has no value purely from its name (it's not a one-word or common phrase or anything). It probably had a little traffic, which is why someone grabbed it. But that traffic surely fizzled over the years that the investor held it. I don't anticipate that anyone else will be trying to acquire the domain.

Still, to ensure I can get it for my friend, I'm willing to spend a bit on a drop-catch service. The registrar that is holding the domain doesn't seem to offer that service. Any suggestions on who to use? (I don't know whether the .org extension makes a difference.)

Thanks, on behalf of the people I'm working for, who plan to provide a useful public service through the domain. Let me know if I can answer any questions.

Welcome back ๐Ÿ™‚ Since its already in pending delete your safest approach is placing backorders across multiple platforms. For .org DropCatch and SnapNames tend to perform well. NameJet can be added as a backup. Even if the name seems low value then it only takes one competing backorder to miss it & also worth checking the exact drop window and keeping a manual registration attempt ready as a fallback. If there is truly no demand then one of these should secure it without much issue.

snapnames (namejet is now part of that) and dropcatch, you never know who else wants it so backorder using full price not discounts on dropcatch.

You welcome Bro
I just remembered that everyone can see lists of domains that have been backordered. Now I need to decide whether to place the backorder anyway (and hope that it doesn't attract any other buyers who see it on a list) or whether to just try to hand-reg it as soon as it's available.

I went onto NameJet and pulled up a list of "last chance / available soon" domains that have bids, which seems equivalent to backorders.

for domains that are dropping you saw a list of how many bidders? Never saw NJ share that only for expiring and other auctions

Which registrar is it with? A lot of registrars nowadays either auction directly or share inventory with third party auction platforms. Drop catching is a good backup plan but if the domain is with a mainstream registrar then it is almost certainly going to go to auction first, and get picked up at auction if it has any traffic.

It's with NameCheap. I don't think the domain has any traffic -- after the initial user accidentally dropped it, someone else had it for 4 years before dropping it. I have been considering either a last-minute backorder or else just trying to hand-reg it; I hope it doesn't randomly get sent to auction (it has no value to anyone but the original registrant).

Namecheap have their own auction platform, every expired domain at Namecheap goes to auction.

You can search namecheap.com/market/auctions or visit the auction page directly via namecheap.com/market/example.com replacing example.com with the domain name.

Keep in mind that auctions can finish at just $1 so if the domain has even $1 of value it is very possible someone will bid on it, and then it'll never be dropped, so it can't be caught.

If it's in Pending Delete, it's way past any auctions.

@randomo just use one/some of the drop catch services that have been mentioned.

As far as I know it depends on things like the registrar, registry and TLD. The specifics of the auction can matter too, e.g: extended auctions and re-ran auctions can extend beyond the auto renew period. I'm not sure how Namecheap handles .org specifically but it is quite common to see pendingDelete .org domains at auction elsewhere.

Hi,
If you want to do it yourself without any expensive backdrop services, you can do it with my DropCatcher script.
You can register the domain instantly when its being deleted.
Screenshot From 2026-03-18 18-45-38.png

My drop catch script supports multiple Registrar APIs.
  1. Dynadot
  2. SpaceShip
  3. Godaddy
  4. NameCheap
  5. NameSilo
  6. OpenProvider
  7. Name.com
  8. Real Time Registrar
You can run this script on your desktop / pc or even on a VPS server with the same code base.

Thanks again, everyone. I ended up making a last-minute auction bid at NameCheap, and I won the domain when nobody else bid. I appreciate all your advice!

Congrats. Yeah, their is few places that don't put them up for auction. Glad you won and are able to help get use out of domain.
