hey
tomorrow i am hoping to apply for the job as a web designer for a local web design firm. One of the things they request is that you have a website that they can see, to show your ability.... one of the only "professional" look websites i have is

www.ballamness.info/site2

could you please have a look and give me some comments on criticism and tips on how i could improve it.
everything from Spelling, Grammar, and typo mistakes, to bigger development errors.

thanks in advance

thanks, i've taken a look into the reason for the two "</body></html>".... and i believe its because i've used PHP Includes for the top and bottom of the page..... and the server has automatically put "</body></html>" at the end of the page because technically, the server can't see that its there, because its in an external file.

Also could you tell me where you are clicking the Admin link, because all the other pages are linked to an include, and i've edited the include to send you to admin.php

I was going to add "Copyright Dave Ballam 2005" but i wasn't sure about legalities, and didn't know if i would need papers to own the copyrights for the site, so i played safe and didn't put it

Oh yeah, the re-alignment of the text when going to or from the mates page, is because the mates page is in a DIV, and the other pages don't have any form of frame, so the text is free to the border of the cell for the other pages.

thanks for your help

Looking good now. You got rid of the side scroller on your shoutbox, however I suggest you make the shoutbox form have no scrollbars. Are you using ASP and PHP? SO you have the site in PHP and the include to an ASP script, lol that's quite cool...

The button at the bottom shows that you use XHTML but you actually only use tentative HTML 4.01, big difference.

Popups can be a big turn off, I suggest removing those ASAP. I would extend the affiliates iframe so it doesn't have a scroll bar.

So why not make the whole site in ASP or PHP? I like how you changed the navigation and maybe you can change the footer to have the same font as the content boxes, albeit smaller font size.

The rollover CSS style makes the link white, perhaps you could change that to a darker colour?

The admin link works now.

Good work, keep it up.

Howdy
Yeah im using ASP to make the more interactive things, and linking them to the PHP page, my php knowledge is slightly limited though, so i've mainly used PHP to include sections of the page, to make it easier for me to update the site design of every page, without actually having to change it on every page.

is this the badge i need?

Yeah i hadn't noticed the popups as i am using Firefox, i think i need to find a better asp host, pretty fast lol

I didn't make the whole site in PHP because im not good enough at PHP..... and the main reason i didn't make it in ASP is because i don't have a good asp host, the server i use is a linux server and has PHP, but cannot have ASP. :(

Yeah i noticed the white rollover looks a bit bad on the grey, i'll change that now

Thanks again
Ballam

PS: DAMN! I just seen how different my site looks in IE

:bingo: Especially when they are trying over and over - I don't honestly see that much Wrong with it (Using IE6 1024*728) - But then I don't use any other browsers so , I may be missing something there ....

I've sorted the CSS problems with IE, now the main thing is that theres a lot more scrollbars in IE. In Firefox, theres only the one scrollbar on the main shoutbox....... and i took a look in IE and they're on everything

IE can make good sites look bad. You definately need to get rid of those popups. You still have a side scroll on your shoutbox frame and also the content moves from the index page to the links page.

Your still not HTML valid. Seeing as you are not, I recommend you take off the button until you are.

A way you could remove the side scroll is by go going to the page your iframe links to. If your iframe is e.g. 150px wide then you could make the content in the iframe page go inside a div which is 100px wide.

Let me know if that works.

[edit]Your site is HTML valid tentatively. Mayeb you could try using XHTML[/edit]

whats Valid Tentatively mean then?

also if i did that DIV idea, would it just not make the DIV scroll rather than the iframe? :-/

Hi

I'm not entirely sure what tentatively valid means but if you take the word "tentative" which means "Not fully worked out" then it is an indication that your site works coding wise but only just, that is there may be parts which are not in accordance to the stricter type of doctype but satisfies a looser one - just. Anyway you should use XHTML because it is better coding and more impressive.

You have an iframe because you are linking to an external webpage - you cannot do that with a div tag unless you use a php include to include an asp file...? Of which then you will have refresh problems. Not for self-promotion but I think a fantastic shoutbox (I didn't write) I have implemented into my Wordpress site using AJAX technology and the message appears without a refresh. It can be found at http://www.debate.co.nz.

I suggest you make your site in either PHP or ASP only so you can have all your files on one server and not rely on another server - which may (and in this case, does) have advertising on it. It also makes your site more structured and efficient.

Iframes can be quite useful. Take a look at that site and even post a random message (I can delete it) to see what it is like, perhaps you could learn how to code a script like it.

With a div you can control the overflow using CSS and margins as well as have a set width.
