Today I purchased the domain, "NapkinBusinessModel".com I purchased it to sell it, but after further thought, I think developing a business plan, yes on a napkin, for this domain is the way to go.

I'm still very new to all this domain business, but I thought I'd share with others the sort of potential that some of your domains hold. Check out "the cocktail napkin hall of fame".

Registering a name and then trying to think of a business to build around it will never work, do it the other way around

Think of a business that has potential, make sure there is a market for the business, make sure you have the capital required, etc etc,...then think of a name and buy the domain.

A lot of new domainers buy a name and cant sell it an then think "What can I do with this domain?" That way of thinking will never work.

A napkin is used to collect and clean up spills and dropped food. It is also used to colect drips and leakage - think of the wine waiter. A napkin business model would discuss services that specialise in these areas. Something like sanitisation after road or building work for example.

This is what I thought of when I saw the name.

Again....I just luv your challenge. I've had both success and failure throughout my business life, but I can tell you you're just wrong. Granted, most of the time I've started with an idea first and then came up with the name, but in this case the name came first, and VOILA! the business idea followed. Here are names of 6 different businesses I've owned and came up with their names, Credit Control Corporation (started it in 1973 and it's still in business), JudgmentScore(tm) (trademarked the name, but could never get the funding), InQuisitorInvestiations (great ame for this business that located people who skipped out on their debts -merged with another business), National 1099 (a specialty tax business I started in 1986, and it's still in business today), Acsel Corp (stupid name I came up with for a Medical Billing Business in 1978, however we paid an advertising firm $2,000 just to agree with the stupid name I came up with because they couldn't come up with one any better...the business is still in business today, but if I were the new owners, I'd change the name in a heartbeat). Finally, the latest business I've started is "FirstCarMemories", LLC, and while I haven't put together a formal business plan, I was able to outline a simple business model on a napkin, and that includes my logo design. Thus the idea for building a business model around the name, "NapkinBusinessModel"

Thanks again for issuing the challenge... btw, have you ever started a business of your own? Named that business? I'm just curious.

Hey there Stag...did you even check out the link I posted about the "cock tail napkin hall of fame"? Have you seen the plan I have for "NapkinBusinessModel" outlined on a napkin?.... I didn't think so, but thanks for your comments just the same.

@Bulloney

I did, and I tried to relate it to the name - a napkin is linen, and doesn't lend itself to note taking, but I assumed you meant a serviette. Also, I tried to relate it to a business use. Some years ago I registered the name GreenDuster.com, but I let that drop a long time ago. I was going to use that to provide a service to clear and fields and gardensof old cars and agricultural vehicles, so I suspect that my idea was coloured by that. Unfortunately I lost the use of the field I was going to use to store the equipment, so I abandoned the idea - it was only planned to be a sideline anyway.

Are you planning to copy the site you mentioned? Unless you have access to historic records, I don't think that would be a productive use of your time. Back in the 60s and 70s some of the artists in Chelsea ( London) used to illuminate the menus in the coffee bars, unfortunately none of those seem to have survived - those would have made an interesting site.

You said,"a napkin is a linen"....here is the standard definition for napkin;

1
. a square piece of cloth or paper used for......

Note, every definition I found says "or paper"

You and I don't think the same way....ever heard of a "Flash Card Business Plan"? Call me crazy, but I've attached what I refer to as a "Flash Card Business Plan" (my idea) because my wife is a Piano teacher and she uses flash cards to teach her students. Guess where I got the idea for this business plan? Note, if it weren't for the fact that many a business plan and idea were sketched out on a paper napkin, those businesses would never exist today.

Ah! the old English class system strikes again. :) I guess I'm too old for the modern Internet. My understanding has always been that a napkin and a serviette are two different products with an overlap of purpose. A sommelier would never use a paper towel as a replacement for a napkin, but maybe they do in modern restaurants these days.

urlurl....so I'm out to dinner last night with a bunch of my Kiwanis buddies and their wives. I tell them about my "Napkin Business Model" and "Napkin Diplomacy" ideas. One idea led to another, and my idea has matured to the point that I plan on sharing it with a couple of friends who have recently retired from the restaurant and food supply industries. Were you aware the napkin business/industry in the US is over a billion dollars, and well over 100M in Canada. We "all" use napkins, and what I'm amazed at is "no one" to the best of my knowledge uses napkins for advertising? My point is, there are any number of ways to monetize your .ca napkin killer domain.

To go along with the two napkin domains I own, a third killer name came up last night at dinner, and since it's available, I plan on buying it today after I speak/converse with my friends in the restaurant and food service industries.

Again, thanks for your input urlurl....now to find a developer and fulfillment partner.

To me writing a quick idea on a Napkin over lunch so one doesn't forget something or needs to demonstrate an idea to another person, And Business Model is a big leap.

If the idea is advertising on a napkin, then places like Subway's figures on the fast food wrapper or drink container is enough. Finer restaurant don't want people to feel like everything they touch in the restaurant a TV commercial.

And then there is the feeling of wiping ink on your mouth and eating utensils.

Thanks just my opinion, Good Luck
