Nameserver Prefixes

When you have a domain that you have assigned as your IP address for dedicated service space, is the prefix for the url form (ie NS1.[mydomain].com) for the IP( ie 205.756.155.34), assigned at the server end (through the cPanel) or is there a special procedure at the the registrar end that is required? (other than procedure for regular DNS changes/assignments.) I can't get the registrar to accept the url form (NS1) to set my name servers and the registrar doesn't accept the straight IP address, (ie numbers), where DNS changes are normally made on their site.

Additionally, I don't have privileges to my WHM to be able to see enough, to answer part of this question.

You need to enter them at the registrar with the prefix. You simply make up the prefix, but of course it has to match what you have set to use on your server and some registarars only allow you to use ns or dns as prefixes. Which registrar is it? You are just trying to set up name servers right?

Ahh Tx. I am "sharing" server space, and the guy I'm sharing with has really restricted my WHM privileges so I can't get in there to edit or see what I've got. I've asked him 2-3 times specifically for the DNS prefix he assigned to the IP addresses (prim, secondary), and he keeps coming back w/ th IP address (numbers) and says that's all I need. The name is at BlueRazor/GoDaddy and they don't use the IP form for DNS changes, but the url (NS1, NS2) form. I'm new to the dedicated/cPanel protocol and therefore don't have a basis of comparison to determine if what I'm being told is valid or B/S.. TX

Do you have access to the Dns Functions -> Edit Dns Zone in your WHM? If so you may be able to find out what it's currently set as there.

That is my problem. I do not have this on my WHM panel and when I explained that I either needed access to the DNS Edit Zone, or the DNS prefix, I received this answer:
Ill help you register the
namservers.
If you want root access i can show you it. Although
there is nothing in there that will help you.
In the meantime, I have spent hours spinning my wheels to get to this point, where I am beginning to understand enough of the big picture, to see where my problems have lain. Kind of like trying to learn the rules and attempting to play solitaire w/ a short deck and not understanding why you can never start the diamond column and finally realizing that someone had taken the Ace of diamonds out of the deck.

I would take up that root access offer lol. :) You'll have all the capabilities and info you need that way. But you might want to just try entering ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.example.com at your registrar and it just might work.

I tried NS1, NS2 DNS1 DNS2, server1, server2, nameserver1, nameserver2, IPs- 000.000.00000, http://000.000.000.00, https://000.000.000.00, reversed their orders, and on and on. Searched the site for other possible DNS settings, started two threads at the Cpanel forum, started taking a Cpanel tut, which is when I first suspected I had parts missing, Have Googled, and have written 20 emails trying to get this to work,

PM sent, Mike. Could be the daddy of this problem. :hehe:

for a temporary fix, you could use a free zoneedit.com account (their nameservers). you would need to know your site's IP
