Namecheap / Spaceship DNS too slow when hunting deleting domains?

If you're planning to handreg a .com domain fresh of the drop, Spaceship (or Namecheap) probably shouldn't be your #1 choice. Spaceship is awesome in many ways, but their DNS propagation is about as slow as it gets. Here is a little background story on a recent handreg experience we had while catching a deleted domain.

5 mins after the .com's started dropping that day, the domain we were watching was already available for registration at Godaddy. A few minutes after that the domain became available at Dynadot as well. Name.com, Sav, One.com and some random registrars we've never used also had the deleted domain available for registration.

90 minutes into the pending-delete process for that day, the domain was still showing as taken by the previous owner at Namecheap and Spaceship. Instead of playing the waiting game, we paid twice the reg fee at another registrar, just to secure the domain.

To make sure it wasn't the cache in the browser that was playing tricks on us, we tried three different browsers, with and without incognito-mode. We tried to flush the DNS, we reset the internet connection and we tried two other devices. Has anyone else had the same problem with Namecheap / Spaceship when registering domains fresh of the drop?

PS: We knew there probably was no demand for the domain, so we didn't bother with a regular backorder.
