Okay so i registered the name of a famous female fighter that has since retired from the sport. She now trains other fighter. She's been in the movies a few times too.

Some tech nerd emails me asking to buy the name. I send the same generic quote $3000. He low balls and after a while he annoys the crap out of me so I said no sale to you for any price. Ignore him for a while.

A few weeks later mma fighter emails me asking why I wouldn't sell to the nerd. I was surprised it was her since I was a big fan. Long story short, i got a nice pair of signed gloves from her and she got her name. ;)

It's always nice to turn in a name that belongs to the right person. But make sure it's the real person that's asking.

I contacted the WHOIS owner of SmoothFIRSTNAMELASTNAME.com offering FIRSTNAMELASTNAME.com for free as a fan. His online media team accepted the domain, and said they'd talk to the fighter about an autograph for my goodwill. They are redirecting the domain I gave them to their original domain, and I have yet to receive an autograph. I question if the fighter was ever notified of this gift.

I saw a public figure's name become available today, and I was trying to think of how (if at all) to approach it... I thought of regging it and then reaching out to them, saying, "You can have it, and if you want you can send me however much money you want to, or not, at my Paypal [email protected]... But I'm happy to transfer it to you regardless."

That way I'm not explicitly charging them, but am allowing them to give me some cash if they want. So I can't be accused of infringing their name.

i was joking with some of my friends on another site about this domain name just a few days ago.

How would you go about contacting the public figure? FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, WHOIS...? It's been tougher than I manically anticipated.

As my portfolio grew and domaining became more than a hobby, I gave up on public figures names. I've tried contacting the few I have left via social media to no avail. I will let them drop if I don't get a response. The Chris Bosh story was enough to deter me away from that side of domaining.

I never really approach anyone or have any intention of selling a famous person's name unless some other fan wants it more than me. But if the actual person approach me and I didn't pay anything but reg fee for it..I would not attempt to hijack their name. But if I did pay a fee over a few hundreds for it.. I would ask for that atleast.. most of the time it's because I do or did plan on setting up a fan site.
