Sure.
I bought many myspace bulletins (some for backlinks, others for $).
In result, i had a bulletin advertising my site to about 1 million people (some myspace accounts had over 100k friends)
In addition, more people added bulletins to their myspace to support the site.

In result, i had a chain of people adding my bulletin resulting in the spike of traffic.
