My Suggestions for next official NP Auction !

Hi,

I attended my first official NP auction on last wednesday. And it was awesome fun. But it had some shortcomings as well :imho: . I'd like to make my suggestions to improve it. Please let your voice be heard if you have something to say.

  • Auction should be held on Fridays. So that people from all over the globe can attend it without worrying about waking up for work next morning ( yeah...most of us do have jobs :P ). I slept at 6:40 AM last time, and was dozing in office all the day.
  • I really liked the idea of buyout. It infact attarcts more people to put their premium names for auctions. But probably 30% is too high. People still will not put 3 letter names and other good names due to that. Probably, different slabs can be predefined for buyout %. May be, 0-1000 ( 30% ), 1000-5000 ( 20% ), 5000-10000 ( 10 % ), 10000+ ( 5% ).
  • It would be good if we can see the list of upcoming names while the auction is going on. So, that we can probably take some break in between.
  • It wouldn't be a bad idea if there can be some minimum quality standards for auction names. Probably, all submissions can be moderated and we all can save time on names like johnhasabigdong.com
  • And last but not the least, we need free snacks !! And smoking should be prohibited :P

Thanks,
Pratik

I can definitely agree with the Friday thing. I've been to a couple of the auctions now and the Friday auctions I've been to seemed to have way more people willing to bid and just in the room in general.

Agreed.

I couldn't make the auction, as I had to be up early the next day.

The unoffical auctions are on Fridays....

Can't have the two clashing!

No offence, but important ( read "official" ) ones should have a better spot.

Well the offical auctions were around first and decided to have it mid-week.
NPGeek Auctions are every two weeks so there is two free fridays in a month.

Exactly, unofficial can work AROUND the official ones :)

- The official auctions have never had a set "Day of the Week" anyway , -RJ- is the official Auctioneer So we kind of have to work around his schedule .....

I like the buyout suggestions Prat :tu: - It may be a bit to steep for a buyout on a Premium domain @ 30%

I'm pretty happy with the buyout as it went though - I honestly think it kept Reports of non-paying buyers etc ... down this time. ;)

I must also add that there should be a set time limit after the last bid. Sometimes it goes fast and sometimes it takes minutes for the countdown to begin. I would say 20-25 sec after last bid. If its too hard for RJ to handle the time and everything then Ill do it if I get the time to go to one.

That's one of the things I suggested in chatroom to RJ. But in a little different way. My suggestion was to have a time limit for each auction. So before 2-3 minutes of alloted time, RJ can start posting 60 seconds left...30 seconds left..10..9..8....1..0..Over. And the highest bidder before hitting the 0 would be the winner.

I like the suggestion of having a minimum bid on some domains. It did put me off auctioning some of my better domains for fear of them going for just a few NP$ if the right buyers weren't present.

Minimum bids would kill the point of live auctions. If we did that then seller must pay a fee like 30% of what the starting bid should be.

I thought at first that I'd be in favor of the buyout and even invoked it for my single domain but to be honest I don't like the idea because I think it changes the character of the auction. I agree that perhaps some names should get a minimum bid but or just don't auction them there because I think part of the whole experience was getting a deal here and there and that doesn't really seem to happen now.

To be honest this one just wasn't nearly as fun as the other ones in the past have been. Everyone there just wanted to chat instead of actually bidding on the names - and while having a good time and chatting is essential to the experience it just seemed to me there were too many kiddies in the room who wanted to make a comment on this or that every 30 seconds.

I agree with that. I never quite knew what was going on because of it.

I am a little torn about wanting them to be on Friday. I am on here everyday and to be honest with you the number of members online drops off on a Friday. I think that it would be detrimental to hold them on a Friday. That being said, I do feel for those of you who are in a time zone which makes the auctions a little more inconvenient.

As to the issue of chit chat, I am unclear if you are referring to the official auction or the unofficial. I was in the official auction the majority of the time and there was very little commenting off topic going on. Towards the end there was more, so I guess it would depend on when you were in there. The unofficial one however seemed unable to control it and there was a lot of shushing going on from the staff, which in turn was more distracting than the chit chat to begin with.

I definately agree about the buyout percentages reflecting on the amount of the winning bid.

I have seen domains sell for 20,000NP in a live auction before, and 30% of NP$20,000 is a great deal of NP$.

Regarding the smoking, definately prohibited. I can't stand the stuff. 8-X

I agree on every point. Name moderation would be great. Also expiring names shouldn't be allowed to be auctioned.
