On 4/2/06 I checked 4469 random LLLL.com's ... there were 843 available from that list ( 18.7% ). Today, on 6/02/06 there are 736 available ( 16.4% ).

You can see the progression below... this accounts for all drops of course, too.

They're going away at a nice clip I think.

Here's the # available from the 4469 and the date/time I completed the check:
843 : 04-02-06 : 5pm

840 : 04-05-06 : 12pm

829 : 04-07-06 : 11am

804 : 04-10-06 : 8am

793 : 04-13-06 : 9am

814 : 04-17-06 : 9am

818 : 04-19-06 : 11pm

786 : 04-23-06 : 5pm

783 : 04-24-06 : 12pm

791 : 04-30-06 : 5am

781 : 05-09-06 : 3am

777 : 05-11-06 : 2am

776 : 05-14-06 : 2am

767 : 05-25-06 : 12pm

754 : 06-01-06 : 2am

736 : 06-02-06 : 12pm

746 : 06-08-06 : 9pm

689 : 06-14-06 : 1pm

Thanks for the thread. I look forward to future updates. At this rate, it will still be another year for all of the LLLL.com's to be taken.

Guys, don't perpetuate the myth that 4 l's are being scooped up... it doesn't do anything but encourage people to throw money at them 'just because' they are 4 l's.

There are more 4 l's available today than there were in 2000-2002 and the number of regs are up around 2% overall from this time last year... NOT a significant factor because around 80% of dropped 4 letters are being picked up... mostly by newbies buying into the myth of the declining number of 4 letters.

Variations in a sample of around 1% of the total available on a daily, weekly or monthly basis does not give you the full picture.

I think there has been an increase in registration of 4L names during the last year by domainers across the board including np members and appreciation that there is value in a 4-letter domain name for end usage. I doubt if all names eg those with Z+Q in the one name will be mopped up in the same way as 3L names have been, but those domainers who have released half-decent names into the market place have secured reg fee + something for their efforts, so it is not wasted money. I reckon that some are quietly regging portfolios for themselves, and one can see on searching that certain combos have had plagues of locusts all over them leaving only a few bare twigs.

I'd like to see the those stats on more LLLL.com's being taking in 2000-2002, I didn't know about that.

I heard that someone regged them all at one point in the .com boom, but not sure if that rumor's true, haha.

This time last year I remember finding out that there were around 140 thousand unregistered domains. Now there is around 76 thousand. So the number is close to halved in a 12 month period.

I read in another thread somebody else verify this but I can't remember at the moment.

Yup... still, from 843 to 689 in about 70 days is pretty good!

I have noticed just from checking the LLLL that drop everyday---It is getting very hard to find one with all 4 good letters---they all just about have a z,x,q or one of those letters----I dont know what the numbers are but it sure seemed like there were alot more LLLL's 2 months ago when I would check than there is now----I just happen to jump on late last nite and checked what had dropped in the last 4 hours and there was only 1 LLLL----CRKM.com---couldn't believe it had all 4 good letters---it just seems that there are fewer and fewer everyday.

According to current rate, it will take 16~17 month before it is all gone. No big change lately.

Just a couple of questions.

Are you sampling the same 4 letter combinations each time?

If so, isn't there a risk that because they are being checked that others will notice these domains as being checked regularly and register them for that reason and therefore biasing the results?

When I've done similar random list checks, I've generated a new list for every check.

Yes, the same domains each time...

Why would that affect the results? If people see tons of random LLLL's like QGUV.com being whois'd every week they're going to buy it? What tool do you use to see who's whois'ing what? How many whois's are run daily? I can only imagine!
