Today, while doing my normal around the house things. I get a knock on the door telling me that I need to vacate the premises immediately. I was like, um no. They then proceeded to tell me that the house is being foreclosed. I said, I was the renter and I have been paying on time for the last 6 months.

Well tough poopie on me.

Bad news, I have to be out by Sunday. Badder news, this stinks a$$ and baddest news, the dude (landlord) won't give me my money back.

I am in dire need to make some money today so I can keep a roof over my head. Does anyone know where I can get some work?

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should do?

Not Meant as Legal Advice

This reply is in no way meant to be legal advice.

You didn't say in your post if you were served a notice by a law enforcement person, or if some civilian just paid you a "friendly" call; or where in the foreclosure process was the house. It's interesting how you were "told" in person on a Friday, which might be considered too late to call a landlord tenant lawyer in time for your assumed Sunday departure.

I cannot comment on Washington law, but if that happened to me in California, I would call the sheriff's office (yours might be these guys: http://www.kingcounty.gov/safety/sheriff/Contact.aspx ) and ask them about the foreclosure eviction procedure, and what would happen to me if I were to refuse to leave my apartment, or whatever was rented.

I am only taking a guess here that the sheriff is the one who evicts, but maybe I'm wrong. It couldn't hurt you to call the sheriff and tell them what happened to you.

Sunday, eh? How convenient for them to not give you enough time to, let's say, get in touch with these people:

http://www.kcba.org/legalhelp/HJP/clients.aspx

Of course, there is nothing stopping you from flipping open the Yellow Pages and calling a landlord tenant lawyer today. A decent lawyer would understand if you called him on the weekend under these emergency conditions; and, if he has a soul, he won't charge you for the call itself.

Other resources you might consider using are:

Best of luck to you.

You're the second person I've heard of in the last couple of weeks that this has happened to :(

I'm sorry to hear about this. Craigslist has a ton of great opportunities to make some quick money if you need it. The "gigs" section (stay away from the adult ones) have some good work.

Best of luck!!

Oh crap....

If you've been paying your rent on time, and he has not being paying his mortgage on time.

I would take what ever is valuable from the house and make your rent back.

If he had told you he could not pay the mortgage then fair enough.

Take him for what he's worth.

My friend recently had the same problem,

Paying the rent but the landlord had not told them he was not paying the mortgage. (they had 2 days to move out)
Time to rip all of the copper piping out of the walls!

Wish you all the best...
I'm sure there are hostels which you can stay at until you eventually work up the money to rerent..
I have a feeling you'd check your landlord is paying his mortgage. ;)

This is pretty much the same scenario that happened to my neighbors.

They rented this house, and the landlord refused to pay the bank so the bank foreclosed it and repossessed it.

In the UK you can claim squatters rights and then they have to get an eviction order to get you removed.

I know someone this happened and they stripped the house, took carpets, cooker, fridge, curtains, anything they could take they took and sold. Im not sure the legality of it.

This sucks.

From a domainer standpoint: Write a blog about your story on a carefully chosen domain name. (I will even post it in my sig for a month for you if you would like.) Make sure to put up some advertising and look up what the best paying clicks for these types of searches that the search engines will eventually give to your site.

Forward any related traffic you have to this name.

If you want to sell some of your better names I will take a look at them and give you advice or buy one perhaps.

Craigslist is always a good source for many things in large areas like Seattle. The house I am in now was found there.

I do feel like you could have stayed, particularly if the sheriff did not come to evict you. Which just gave me the idea to makes sure to give out resources on your blog for other people facing this situation as those will be some of your visitors.

You paid through October I presume? What a mess. The train wreck is influencing a lot of things for a lot of people.

Best of luck, way to be very positive about this!

This is an experience, positive & negative at the same time. I think I will make this an experience. I will rise above this and come out way on top. I am going to try to make someething positive of all this. Thank you everyone for the support. I know I could have been defiant, but I don't like trouble and trouble doesn't like me.

My domains for sale are listed in a thread

I am going to be sitting here til they kick me out, but I am going to be trying to make some progress with what I am going to try to sell. I did a craigslist gig, waiting on payment. GAHH but its awesome.

If there is anyone who is a programmer, I'd love to talk to you. I have some ideas that I want to implement. We can work some payment deals whenever, just know I'm broke for now.

This is a humbling experience, let me tell you :kickass:

Have you tried confronting your landlord? I'd use HomeBuyers advice first but if that didn't work, I'd be heading over to his place with a baseball bat and a few friends demanding my money back.

I went to his house today but he wasnt there. I did though kick his mailbox over and uprooted some of his plants. I felt justified..

I cant get in the house, he was severely past due. Like its scandalous.

You think the bank/company repossessing the house would allow you to stay if you paid them rent, because they are going to have a tough time selling in the current market.
