Unstoppable Domains โ€” Expired Auctions

My Estibot Education

I had seen a system for selling domain names that used Estibot heavily, so I decided to "roll the dice" and see what I could learn in a month. It's been interesting.

I am not really concerned about the exact value the system calculates. I would like to improve my ability to look at a list of domains and accurately rank them by value.

The first step was to run the domains I already have registered through the appraiser. Values ranged from lots of zero value domains to a few worth thousand. Some values make sense, some less so.

Short, no hyphen dot coms are worth more. No surprise there. One of my sites makes almost as much per day as it appraised for. So, clearly there are "sleepers".

Next I went through some of the appraised available lists looking at the high value domains and then searching for keywords of special interest to me. I assume that because the domains don't get to the available list until they have been filtered through all the drop catching systems domain buyers use, what shows up there are outliers and/or problems. The ones I saw made no sense or had obvious trademark issues.

I saw a fair number of reasonably popular people's names available (not celebrity names). It made me wonder if a site devoted just to those kinds of domains might work.

I have no interest in typo domains but found one humorous one that tempts me.

I found one low appraised value domain that is the perfect dot com I have been looking for to become the hub of a niche subject I specialize in. Worth the cost just for that name.

I found a dozen other zero appraised domains that will let me replace hyphenated non dot coms that I had registered but been reluctant to build sites on.

I get the feeling the estimates are best for topics which are popular and have a lot of advertising. Consumer electronics, dieting, romance, etc. If, like me, your interests lie in less popular subjects (antiques & collectibles for example)the appraisals are probably low.

Even after spending 40 hours over the last week looking though Estibot results I can't see patterns of value well enough that I would feel confident buying a bunch of domains, on subjects I am not familiar with, to try and sell.

Comments from experienced domain sellers appreciated :)

I have been considering getting a subscription to Estibot for a while, if I ever do then I will be more able to answer your question.

Is it worth it? :)

Is it worth it? :)

I found NativeAmericanArtsAndCrafts.com which I will use as a hub to tie together my more specific sites in that niche. HopiArts, Navajo-Rugs, etc. It's long but has all the keywords I could want in that niche. I'll probably put a shopping cart there to sell my own stuff (Jimdo looks promising) and use the niche sites drive traffic and monitize with AdSense and EPN.

Part of the reason for posting this is to decide if I got most of the value in the first month, or if I should keep subscribing.

So yes, the first month was $50 very well spent.

Estibot Education is a nice oxymoron :)

Machines have not evolved enough to take into account human perceptions. As estibot is a script, it can only work within the limits of the human who invented it :imho:

What I meant when asking "is it worth it?" was "are the extra tools the subscription unlocks worth the asking price?" :)

In my opinion, yes. The fact is that estibot is a program and so it goes off metrics,BUT, the fact also is that many NP members who couldn't do a better job than estibot think its useless. Its just great to have that "other" perspective. The historical sales linked to names you appraise is also very useful.

No, you have all the tools you need for free. Use the google keyword tool, domaintools.com, Namebio.com, and Google.com.

Google keyword tool: Exact search volume and keyword competition will tell you if your on to something.

Google.com: Go to google and search for your "keywords". Are there advertisers? Are there a ton of search results?

DomainTools.com: Go to domain tools and check on the age of the domain (if your buying from a backorder or pre-release).

Namebio.com: Check for recent sales of domains that have your keywords. Go to the Google Keyword Tool and compare results of previously sold domains and the one you want to sell.

Your Favorite Register: How many extensions is the domain taken in? (Again for Expired or pre-release domains)

Using estibot to appraise numeric domains suggests that either estibot is significantly overstating their value or these domains are extremely undervalued.

I lean towards the latter possibility, since numerics get type-in traffic, and have a myriad of uses (type any 5 digit number into google and you will see how many different meanings/uses/products are associated with each number).

But of course that doesn't mean you can easily sell the domain for the appraised value, or that the perfect development idea for the domain will be easy to discern.

Chinese domainers buy and sell these domains mainly for the number sequences and the special meaning they have in Chinese culture, but I think the Estibot valuations suggest there are other potential uses for these domains that have yet to be fully explored. What those are I am not yet sure, and it may take a long time for these domains to reach their potential.

But numeric domain prices have been rising along with the increasing Chinese presence on the internet, and I do think the gap between the Estibot valuation and the market value will continue to narrow.

I've used estibot pretty much since it's inception... valuations seem heavily biased towards certain keywords and not entirely reliable for others. On what basis is this bias is anyone's guess. I use it purely for search & cpc numbers, not for domain values.

Estibot can't even get .com valuations correct, so don't expect anything much from it for other extensions and certainly not for ccTLDs. Here are some examples of .com valuations that are totally out of tune with today's market prices:

Products.com - $62,000
Touts.com - $420
ResidentialProperty.com - $4,800 (really?)
Exhibitions.com - $6,800
HomeTheater.com - $21,000 (841k searches per month, $2cpc, 1.7mm MWDQ)
Herbal.com - $10,000 (I'll buy this right now at this price)
Mango.com - $14,000
Diam.com - $1,900
I could go on all day, but you get the picture...

At the risk of revealing my ignorance, how would you rank the value of those domains. Not what their value is, but ordered from most valuable to least valuable.

If I do a keyword search in Estibot and then look at the appraised results within that one search do you think the rank order of value is mostly correct with some exceptions.

In my case I ended up finding a lot of zero appraised value domains that were stronger (non-hyphenated dot coms) than the ones I had previously been able to find. This is in my tiny little niches.

Estibot is useless, IMO. I mean it's fun to see how it values a domain but 99% of domains will never sell for the amount it states. Also his free ebook on developing domains into minisites is outdated (http://estibotpro.com/blog/2010/02/...-is-here-and-its-completely-free-to-download/). Some of the sites mentioned in it (EntrywayOrganizer.com | ClassBrv.com | NeonSunglasses.com) aren't even on the first page of google anymore as google is constantly changing and updating and in that process are tossing sites around like pancakes. I hope they eventually are shut down to be honest. It's much easier to stay ranked on Yahoo/Bing.

How about computers.com for $150,000 :p 5 million exact searches per month, $4 avg cpc.

Take all these automatic valuations with a pinch of salt.

People regularly sell domains valued at $0-$50 for $x,xxx each.

As I've always said, Estibot & all the other auto-appraisal sites are a joke. Only use for novelty purposes only.

You have better place to spend your money than buying estibot subscription.
