OK, well given you have already mentioned your mostly concentrating on close-out bargains in the $30 range. I'm going to come to the conclusion that you've been swayed by the names that have been presented before you rather than seeking practical domains of multi-appeal. There may or more likely NOT be a buyer for some of your names. But they are not the type that have a broad appeal. Mostly they are one-shot chancers and that dosen't bode well for your domain investment strategy.

I'm not going to single out any domains for valuation without at least doing some term search, just don't have the time this morning. WendyHouses I recognised immediately but I'm not sure if that's just because of my age or its continuing appeal.

Lots of garbage to be found in closeouts worth nothing, but even those names find inexperienced buyers..just because the words make sense together and not always..
I checked a few names and your asking prices on Atom seem rather high. I would price them under 2K and see how it goes..

People keep putting 2 words together and make no sense.
What is Tuition Cafe?

Hey @johnn

In my country where higher education is valued, there are a lot of students after graduating from their universities who start a tuition business (tuition centers) to utilize what they have learned. For example, if you switched your Google search engine country to Singapore and typed in "tuition cafe", there are existing tuition centers which are called "The Physics Cafe" (tutor specializes and teaches O and A level Physics) and "Economics Cafe" (tutor teaches A level Economics). There is even one called "That Tuition Cafe".

Maybe "TuitionCafe.com" may not appeal to certain end-users in different countries, but as I live in Singapore, I can see a specific use of this domain.

But thanks for your comment!

I agree that there are a lot of trash in the closeouts, that's why it takes some time to sieve the occasional name that makes sense.

Thanks for your feedback though!

Physics Cafe make more sense than a Tuition Cafe

Definitely seen worse portfolios so that's something!

My favourites and what I'd price then at are...

WendyHouses - 2995
ChampagneServices - 1495
WesternWok - 1495 (love me some alliteration)

As mentioned above the key is to find names that appeal to multiple niches or industries but I get it, sometimes you see a name and in the heat of the moment it sounds great and you pull the trigger. I do it almost daily and regret it straight away 🤣.

Hello @D Haynes,

Thanks for the feedback! May I know how do you arrive at the above asking prices? What I do when pricing a domain is to take the median value of retail sales ($1k and above) of related sold domains from Namebio over the past 5 years as a benchmark. Do correct me if my approach to valuation is wrong, I am keen to learn!

Definitely seen worse portfolios so that's something!
Thanks for the compliment! In the past, I also registered some trashy domains, am glad to know I have improved my picks!

Is it possible for you to give a real life example? I am not sure what kind of names do that? One word domains?

Was that gem a closeout you bought for $30?
No, it was bought at a seller from Flippa at $11.

Let me get this out of the way - I'm a total domain noob.
But for what it's worth, I've found your portfolio somewhat interesting because you seem to be falling into some of same pits that I fall into.
TiaraBags.com - don't think that's a thing
GunsAcademy.com - GPT: ""GunsAcademy": Slightly less formal and may imply a broader or more general academy related to guns. It could work for branding but might be perceived as less polished. For clarity and professionalism, "Gun Academy" is generally preferred.
PetraRobotics.com - so niche - who will buy it?!
FurryPlace.com - I actually kind of love it for a pet shop brand/website. I'm wondering what I'm missing here... :)
FortAutos.com - ah?
HireCabs.com - GPT: "Neither "Drive Cabs" nor "Drive Cab" is commonly used in everyday language. Here’s what they suggest: "Drive Cabs": Implies the action of driving multiple taxis or working as a taxi driver, but it isn’t a natural phrase that people would use. "Drive Cab": Similarly, it implies driving a single taxi but isn’t commonly used. People typically say “Drive a cab” or “Cab driver” to convey the idea of someone who drives a taxi."

Anyway, I'll stop here. My point is - if it's not right then it's not right. If you are going for these kind of domains, perhaps it needs to roll of the tongue in common English.

Thanks @subs for your candid feedback! I think in my haste to acquire as many domains to my target portfolio size, I made some wrong purchases, maybe I need to learn to be more disciplined and patient...

But having said that, i feel there were some plus points that my portfolio has; in my atom portfolio, 4 domains have received strong buyer interest despite being listed recently. They were:
  1. LayCoffee.com
  2. SupperKing.com
  3. Hirecabs.com
  4. ChampaigneServices.com
In conclusion, I think my portfolio has some wins as well as some areas that need to be improved.

Thanks to all who took the time to comment!

Sure.
LayCoffee sounds kind of awesome to be honest, I've missed it.

Edit: Tho perhaps LayCafe would've been better

Is it possible for you to give a real life example? I am not sure what kind of names do that? One word domains?

Well to use your domains as an example...

MarbellaCondos.com
EdinburghCars.com

These are what people might call "Geo" domains as they're geographically oriented. The problem is the only potential buyers for these names are car related businesses in Edinburgh and property related businesses in Marbella which obviously exist but in the grand scheme of things its a very small buyer pool.

Now if the were say EliteCars.com and PinnacleCondos.com you still have a niche but your potential buyer pool just became anyone on the globe looking to start a car or property business.

Obviously those names might cost more to aquire but you get the point. The more potential uses a name has the more likely you are to sell it. That's why I chose ChampagneServices.com as one I liked as it could have a multitude of potential uses, not just directly related to the actual drink of Champagne but by using the word Champagne as a sign of high end services in any field (within reason).

Prices wise I don't really have a method just a feeling based on what I've sold in the past and what I think I would be willing to pay for it were I a potential buyer. I tend to tier a name in my head so say its a two word run of the mill name it might be 1995 or if its what I consider a bit better its 2995 and so on lol which doesn't help you at all but there you go 🤷‍♂️🤣

I think these are good/worth keeping:

HireCabs.com
DriveCabs.com
FindParcel.com
NinjaBolt.com
SupperKing.com

What ruins the value of a lot of those are miss-matched industries or too niche like DeliCleaning.com

Also many plurals lower the value and repeating letters like VintageEyes.com with Double-E

Overall, not bad. From here I would slow down on closeouts and hand regs, and maybe save up for a nice $200-500 auction domain. A really good one, be patient and find a good deal on a 5-figure end-user domain.

Your not likely to find one-word domains available, certainly not in .com anyway. (Do stick with .com)
Stick with keywords but make sure you suffix or prefix word enhances the two word registration. Avoid words that don't enhance the whole structure or really don't add anything apart from 'flannel' .

It's unlikely that anybody would be interested in your word-pairings if they can go about the same exercise and get a similar result. Avoid small or very niche domains, to widen your appeal. What type of businesses exist in its dozens even in average sized town.

By all means go-out on a limb If you think you've found a pairing that has an INDUSTRY wide appeal, but it will have to have a Wow factor.

Hi @phaethon

Which names do you find their asking prices rather high? Also, to price them under $2k, is there a method which you arrive at a specific figure? Or is it based on your intuition or past sales experience like @D Haynes? Because I use the median value of comparable retail sales (at least $1k) domains in Namebio over the past 5 years to arrive at a specific benchmark?

Thanks for your feedback though!
