Today I read about retail stores getting crushed and more and more moving to online only. Is this good for the domain industry? Will more and more small businesses need domains?

"As consumers have increasingly flocked to online sites to make purchases rather than choosing to spend money in shopping malls or physical stores, the trend has pressured brands that were once giants in the industry like Macy’s (M), JCPenney (JCP) and Sears (SHLD) – all of which reported disappointing first-quarter sales results last week as in-store foot traffic slides. "

List of stores I read about that are hurting:
Macys
JC Penney
Dillards
Nordstrom
Kohls
TJ Maxx

The above stores shed a combined $4.2 billion in market value

Target
Sears
Marshalls
Home Goods

The above stores are continue to struggle

I believe the trend towards online shopping " for the giants of their respective industries " will help familiarize and normalize " online shopping " for the millions of consumers who still brick and mortar all of their purchases.

We have been and are huge advocates of online shopping and receive both necessary and unnecessary purchases several time per week.

Would seem to me that most small businesses will require an online presence in the next 10-ish years to survive - a boon to local web masters and yes, will of course require domain name acquisition.

Since " location location location" dominates in the real estate marketplace, so too IMO should EMD, or Geo product /services domains and the like increase a small business's competitive advantage when online shopping supersedes brick and mortar shopping.

And as an editorial I believe the ignorant, the arrogant and, the incompetent sales and service staff at many once fine retailers will hasten their ultimate demise or diminishment in their marketplaces..

A smooth working website is fast, efficient, courteous and far more cost efficient than their flesh and blood retail counter-parts.

If the smaller players can't compete offline, where they have the location advantage, it will be all but impossible to compete online, where they will have zero advantage.

I have also heard much about "Hyper Localization". It's kind of weird that on one end, you have more consumers buying locally, but on the other end, you have large retailers, which are local to many consumers, hurting badly.

I truly believe that we haven't seen anything yet as far as internet usage and more specifically domain names.
The domain name industry is in it's infancy really. IMO

Anyone that is panic selling will probably wish they had held onto a few good domains. :)

They can compete online... very very possible. I own an online business and there are giant ecommerce company in my country but having understood that it is all about niches, you have nothing to worry about.

" the earth is spinning and will not stop for you, so adapt or you will die " and this is the same story of nokia and lot of big companies once a time.
