.mobi .mobi VS Redirection Scripts - Analysis and Results

So,

While I was on the party bus with fellow domainers, we naturally got into a .mobi argument. What striked me the most during that argument was how the supported told me to go to godaddy.mobi and how it was so easy to use.

So naturally, i typed in godaddy.com on my RAZR... VOILA it was the same exact site as godaddy.mobi. This brought my lightbulb on. I have decided to run a test thread of all those .mobi "sightings" posted and see WHICH .com's looked the exact same as the .mobi.

I used "WinWAP" a cellphone simulator:

Results:

Note, only the "big" sites are being analyzed, the so called "shockers".

NBA.com - NBA.mobi - SAME
Godaddy.com - Godaddy.mobi - SAME
ATT.com - ATT.mobi - SAME
Barlcays.mobi - Parked Page
bofa.mobi - bofa.com - Different
tdnam.com - tdnam.mobi- SAME
wnba.com - wnba.mobi - SAME
Connexie.nl - Connexie.mobi - SAME
Weather.com - Weather.mobi - SAME
MSN.com - msn.mobi - SAME -
AmericanIdol.com - Mobile Friendly
Time.com - Time.mobi - Different
Paramount.com - Paramount.mobi - Different
amatrak.com - amtrak.mobi - different
orange.fr - orange.mobi - different

Too lazy to search for more.

Most of the big "news" is nothing but redirects to whatever the .com is pointing to.

Finally, companies are getting it and running auto-redirection scripts.

Oh yes, just for kicks ran a few of the top alexa sites:

Yahoo.com - Mobile friendly
Google.com - Mobile Friendly
Live.com - Mobile Friendly
facebook.com - Mobile Friendly
Blogger.com - Mobile Friendly
Myspace.com - Mobile Friendly

Hmm, if the big boys are using redirection scripts i wonder what the small boys will do? Monkey see and Monkey Do.

List goes on and on.

It is clear that .com is going to stay, and redirection scripts are working.

Why would you even type .mobi if you were a user?!!? Its longer then .com and more troublesome to type then .mobi.

You do the math, unless you are completely blinded.

.mobi is not trying to fight a .com (We all know that .com is the King, And They can co exist together) So why are these major companies getting the .mobi extensions besides protecting there name and using them for redirects right now? Does it have something to do with Standards?

Maybe they believe that somehow someway, if it redirects or doesnt redirect, that the enduser will get the content that they requested in a resonable time and efficiency?

It's clear that redirects are working for some. Good for them. Begs the question why they would bother working with their mobi then. What math do you want me to do? About 75% of your examples use their mobi. Please show me another <1yr old extension with that level of adoption?

BTW, have you read the .mobi subforum rules?

$10 to redirect a .mobi to the same site the .com redirects to keeps the webmaster busy. There is no "adoption". Everything is already developed, for $10 to protect their Trademark, why not.

Oh yes, everytime an end user is typing NBA.com, and sees a clean site, he will try the same for other sites.

The .com branding is doing its thing. .MOBI is going to have a hard time to break that cycle, considering a considerable amount of people have used google.com / yahoo.com on their cellphone.

Thats the point.

Yes thats the point. The most efficient way would be to stick with .com and not confuse the consumer. Again, please refer to my point above. Even in the most simplistic ways of comparing, .com wins in keystrokes. Please tell me why anyone would want to type even more keystrokes for the same site (if they even knew about .mobi)

So all .com owners are going to make their sites mobile friendly?

Eventually yes IMO.

And for the "new extentions", in the long future yes. I am sure the big ccTLD sites are starting to do the same.

A question back to you:

So all .mobi owners are going to make their sites not parked?

"So all .mobi owners are going to make their sites not parked?"

I really hope not to many leave good names parked, as we all know alot of names will be parked...which would possible kill the extention (and why mtld has teh RFP process). Me, I am trying as hard as I can to develope my names with the limited funds that I have. Right now I am starting to learn more about how to develop now and hopefuly I can contribute to the content of the mobile era. But for now 10% of my names are semi-developed/ and developed.

Of course not. But when code compliance is enforced, any .mobi site that isn't mobile friendly will be shut off. That's the essence of the .mobi trustmark.
