whats, sad is we all know they use a code name for a product before it hits and than it changes names so microsoft or what ever can have the market place of domains for them selfs.

Just like wii did.

Personal thoughts dont reg all the domains for this name.

(watch i say this and they keep the name and i kick my self in the butt)

I have to say that "surface" is a pretty intuitive name for this product AND they did go on national TV to mil of consumers watching and call it Surface. imo, that name is going to stick.

It would have been another thing if they had leaked a story and pic to an industry rag like techcrunch or something, but this was the Today show. You can't get a much lower denominator for the American public than that. You wouldn't want to confuse that crowd with a code word :)

Maybe MS learned something from the Zune and not having the .com. Maybe MS will just do m1[r05oft.com/surface?

Ahhh see i don't know full background on that haha.

But yea would be smart if they did that, why don't companys just do that? makes more sense.

=/

Most of the domain names I see here are crap, imho.

One thing I think MIGHT happen is that virtual might become a decent keyword again with regards to this stuff.

I think I learned my lesson last year with the Zune... Although I registered several good domains, they have yet to find homes... I opted to hold off on the Surface...

A year is not that long, especially for a new product line. It took me about a year to sell a few vista domains.

Surface technology is basically in it's infancy but it looks like it has a lot of potential to reach a very wide audience... more then the Zune does.

I love seeing that the gambling industry (Harrahs and IGT) are embracing this and will most likely have gaming machines (think virtual blackjack, poker or slots... at least now I know who took surfacepoker.com :) ) using surface tablets this year.

I don't see surface reaching home use for quite a few years (3-5)

Right now surface is for businesses, so I am sure some of the domains will do well when they reach the deep pockets of a business looking for a domain.

The finger is touching the surface of the display screen. This video is giving you a birdseye view from the inside of the computer looking out. :)

Sounds like it...either that or they had some inside information, but damn...that was a lot to spend on the name BEFORE MS did the press release about the Surface, so did the seller have inside information too? I dunno...just seems like a weird sale.

Seems to me it was smart -- if Microsoft had waited until after the announcement, I imagine they'd have had to pay a lot more than $27k...

Maybe MS wanted to just make it a sweet deal for the seller to begin with, so that later when they went public with the announcement there wouldn't be anyone able to play up some bad press about Microsoft being cheapskates. And really, that's like 1 second's earnings for Microsoft, so it works out well for both...
