Well this isn't just a simple name change. If that was the case, it'd be a bit ho hum because well....facebook. But this has facebook and metaverse intertwined. This is really about the Metaverse and mark hiding facebook from his past lolz!

Like her or not, Rachel Maddow did a segment tonight on a bunch of companies that rebranded to hide from past disasters and then she started talking about Facebook.

FB is trying to repackage and rebrand, because a lot of people want to see FB either be broken up into smaller interests or the government to have more control or oversight of its operation.

Can you share why they will go big on Meta names? When FB already rebranded the company name to Meta now, don't you think people will try to stay away from Meta/Metaverse names to avoid any legal or issues or similar name confusions? I am really confused here...

Facebook does not own the Metaverse. Many companies will use Meta and Metaverse.

I am really torn as to whether meta is now more or less valuable as a keyword.

In some ways metakeyword is now just promoting Facebook.

I don't see it that way, on the promotion side. Everyone will be building a metaverse or their own virtual world.

China will probably have it's own Metaverse, Matthew Ball wrote:

Metaverse is the main point. Meta was shorter and therefore more desirable, but now that (in many ways) Meta=Facebook, suddenly Metaverse is more desirable.

Just how I see it in the very short term.

I just took the "China" filter off my Google Analytics so I can see how they do visits to my meta names. Normally its a lot of bots and that is too much noise in the GA reports. But Chinese buyers seem to be putting a lot of money into Meta names at the moment, so I want to keep an eye on their interests.

FB's whole point was to appear to own the industry. It's why he presented the metaverse as if it were a FB product before introducing its new name as Meta. This is of course wrong but things will balance out the more other corps like Apple, MS and Google step forward with their versions of the Metaverse. That will force consumers to understand that FB isn't the only player in the Metaverse race.

But what I'm mostly hoping for is tgathe Metaverse will be open and based on the W3C's WebXR framework, which enables the internet to be the Metaverse. That is the true Metaverse. The W3C is lagging behind in my opinion. They SHOULD have all the major players at a round table to discuss the protocols for an open virtual internet instead of a bunch of closed walled gardens. I feel like banging on their door to ask what's going on with them lol.

Maybe they've tried their best and FB is only Intersted in a shamekess power grab. That would be very Zuck.

With the huge popularity of the words Meta and Metaverse it is very possible that these words will enter the public domain again and that will be considered okay to be used by everyone for all things related to Metaverse which will be pretty much for everything.

FB (Meta) wants to change its image. To do so, it would rather encourage "creators" and pretty much everyone to enter the Meta. Instead of going after anyone or anything. We've seen this happening with them literally throwing money at domains.
I see sales of all XR, AR, Holo, Meta, Metaverse, Verse, MV, etc. happening at this stage as all of these are necessary. It's a positive news for all of them. Now which company wants to be related to what and how it wants to present itself, will decide what sells. Plus many speculative/defensive sales.
Another thing worth noting is that the scene has shifted a bit with new TLDs nearly price matching .com in sales, this could also mean value of .com increasing simultaneously.
I am not suggesting registering every possible domain out there, but the field is so wide and open, there are still domains to be regged (or to be picked from aftermarket) and money to be made. Good for the end users as well as they can possibly hand register their brand.
Lastly, again and again Mark repeated "we'll see this happening in the next decade", so this is only going to get better, but it's ON.

Meta doesn’t belong to Facebook or a specific company, they just had a smart move to acquire meta.com in the past and going to take the advantages of it. Meta/metaverse is open any company/individual if they want to be there. I assume the usage of metaverse will increase and more companies will be involved, more domains will be on demand.
