I saw a press release today that Cincinnati.MD was launched as the first of 500 cityname.MD medical/health forum sites.

Cincinnati.MD is one of the fastest growing Healthcare resource portals on the Internet. The prototype website is catching the attention of national sponsors and Cincinnati.MD just launched the first of 500 free city healthcare forums. "Healthcare is local not national" said one sponsor.

From the above, it would sound like they've registered at least 500 .md names for this purpose.

.MD's are not cheap... Last time I checked, they were going for around $150/year... I heard that only Medical Doctors could register them..

The FAQ indicates it is for only the health care industry. However, they are a repurposed (Moldova) ccTLD and not under an ICANN agreement. They can be as strict as they wish in enforcing it or not.

More accurately, I've been able to register them in the past, so assume that my complete lack of medical qualifications means they aren't really enforcing anything

I suppose if you create a site with anything remotely related to health, that technically puts you in the health care industry. For $150 a pop, they probably don't care about credentials as much as content. Probably the only way they'd really enforce it is if you put up porn or scam sites they didn't like.

I would guess one reason they chose .md is because getting all the 500 top city names wouldn't be all that hard or nearly as expensive as getting them in .com, .net, .info, or even .us in relative terms.

Apparently, they share something in common with .TV

Today, I checked on Nurses.md and it said the domain was available but it was a "premium" name, and to register it you need to contact the .md registrar directly. Considering the normal reg fee is $150, I can only imagine what the "premium" reg fee is. :o

I noticed a while ago that medics.md was still available. Just checked back and I see that it still is and is not classed as a 'premium' domain . IMO this is a better name than nurses.md.

Even though it is a good name I still can't bring myself to pay $150 though!
